Alan Moore Appreciation Thread

I can't be the only mum out there who is into the comics of this heavily bearded genuis, right?

I'm not a massive Watchman fan, although I like it a lot more now than I used to, it was V for Vendetta (the comic, not the cacking film) that turned me onto him. Evey being set free by V on the rooftop after hearing Valerie's story was such powerful description of liberation, self-actualisation.

Plus, you gotta love his accent

So, anyone else out there a fan?

Mildly. I was a 2000AD fanatic in my younger days (have you everread Halo Jones? Magnificent stuff) and have lots of comic-mad friends. ALso once saw a TV programme that featured Alan Moore, and he just looks so perfectly right for what he does

One of the few things he's done that I haven't read, actually. DH assures me that they're very good. We recently got a collection of his future shocks from 200AD though, they're lots of fun.

If you haven't read any of his other stuff I heartily reccommend him. Recent stuff like Promethea is fantastic, a touching, funny and acessable comics primer for modern magic! He's an odd lad.

Was it the TV show he did in the 80's "England, My England" with him poncing camply about in a white suit? That was hilarious.

Alan Moore is a legend In fact, Watchmen is one of my book club choices I'm determined to spread the word!

Favourite works of his: Promethea, From Hell, Top Ten. Promethea was actually a big inspiration for my huge backpiece tattoo. His Swamp Thing strips were really good too, although as usual they featured a huge cataclysmic event that seemed evil but actually wasn't

I love Alan Moore. League of Extraordinary Gentlemen esp. Why such crap films though?
There was a brilliant interview with him on radio 4 with Stewart Lee, he seemed like a genuinely lovely bloke.

Have you read any Neil Gaiman?

cyteen · 06/04/2008 21:27

I like Neil Gaiman's short stories - haven't read that much of his comic output, just the first Sandman which was pretty good and the Black Orchid which was less so. He's got a bit of a tendency to whimsy that I don't like so much, but when he reins it in he can be superb.

The thing about films of Alan Moore books is that they're always a bit redundant - I mean, they've already got the visuals, with potential unlimited by SFX budgets or directorial imagination. He no longer accepts any money from film adaptations of his work because he's so fed up with people cocking it up.
