Opera for beginners

Where do I start?

I've seen the Magic Flute and Love for Three Oranges. But what now? I can't afford tickets to a live performance at the moment so are there any good CDs (or DVDs even) for a novice?

Where do I start? Please don't suggest Wagner.

I'm a novice to opera as well but I liked The Marriage of Figaro (Mozart) and Carmen (Bizet) which I got on CD from my local library, can't remember the recordings unfortunately

try this? I find some of this website a bit annoying in places but the list of popular operas is as good a place to start as any.

Yes, I know much of the music from the Marriage of Figaro and have played bits from Carmen too so they should have been obvious really

Thanks

Yeah I guess my choices are a bit obvious !

I've always wanted to see Madame Butterfly, don't think that's going to happen at the current price of tickets!

Obvious perhaps but not ones I'd thought of. I think I will enjoy them.

The concert sounds lovely, Califrau. I am lacking in culture at the moment.
