Could someone translate this motto for me, my O Level latin is very rusty?

Honor virt virtus animi.

Hats off to anyone who can do it!

dignity/valour at heart?

Sorry, my latin may well be worse than yours

Bessie123 · 03/01/2008 17:09

Is it a motto for a council or something? It could be something like dignity or valour in public office is valour at heart. But it's been a long time since GCSE latin...

Just spoke to my mum and she thinks it means

"the most honourable virtue is strength of the mind" or something along those lines. She has a degree in Latin but that was nearly 50 years ago so she's really rusty!!

Bessie123 · 03/01/2008 17:18

Oh, that sounds MUCH better than my translation. Animus can also mean spirit, I think.

Mercy · 03/01/2008 17:22

I think so too, Bessie.

She said it should be a motto as a couple of hte words are shortened but she couldn't think of a 'snappy' way to translate it.

Sorry I'm afraid I can't do better than Mercy's offering- it's a quarter of a century since I did Latin A-level!
I am reminded, however, by your "genii" tagline, of the story of the Latin pedant who went to the icecreamseller and asked for 2 "Magna"!

Zebedeedoodah · 04/01/2008 11:56

Brilliant! I knew someone on here would come up with some sensible suggestions. It's actually a family motto (not mine!), but doesn't come up when you google it.

I love the Magna
