History podcasts

Can anyone suggest any? I've looked about but haven't really found one I love. I don't really like jokey ones. I just want to get a bit of information about something I don't know about while I go for a walk.

I'm sure there's already a thread, but the search function doesn't seem to be working.

Thanks

I love the history of Rome (Mike Duncan) podcast, it's on Spotify.

I also find 'in our time' great (even if Melvin Bragg is sometimes grating) as is a random bit of history or culture in a reasonable amount of depth.... there are loads of episodes on BBC sounds app.

Finally I also really enjoyed the history of English language podcast (again on Spotify) although it tailed off at the end, and became a bit word list-y, but great for the pre-history bit!

The Rest Is History is very good. Light in tone, but not jokey. They cover lots of interesting subjects with a good amount of detail and the episodes are not too long.

BBC Sounds - Tunnel 39

MerylSqueak · 26/06/2021 15:06

Thanks for your suggestions.

I do listen to In our Time, but I would quite like a series on a topic, or at least a more searchable list. The BBC Sounds search function is woeful.

If you like the Mike Duncan one, you might like this: www.podbean.com/pu/pbblog-ays2e-91a63
Hopefully the link will work.

Ah no, it doesn’t. Try googling ‘The Myths and History of Ancient Greece and Rome podcast’.

Mide7 · 26/06/2021 15:20

Dan Carlin’s hardcore history. Worlds longest podcasts

BeneficiaryMadness · 26/06/2021 15:29

Mike Duncan (The History of Rome and Revolutions are both great)
The History of England (by David Crowther)
The Ancient World
Tides of History (I love his current series on ancient humans)
The China History podcast (by Laszlo Montgomery)

I know you said you don’t like jokey ones, but I do like;
Rex Factor
Totalus Rankium

I'm signed up to an app called History Hit. Some really quality stuff on there.

Sounds amazing I love learning more about history - I look forward to listening to it! Another great history learning tool is History Heroes - a card game for all teaching you all about different poeple in history. I totally recommend!

midsomermurderess · 03/10/2021 20:59

The Ancients. Full of wonderful stuff. As is Tides of History. So wide ranging across cultures and down the ages.

JaninaDuszejko · 10/10/2021 16:48

You're Dead to me is jokey but brilliant if anyone else doesn't mind a few jokes.

supercalifragilistic123 · 10/10/2021 16:53

It's new so there aren't many episodes but I've really been enjoying 'short history of'

They also did the real dictators series which is a fantastic listen.

AnnaMagnani · 10/10/2021 17:00

I also started with The History of Rome with Mike Duncan, then really liked his Revolutions.

I've moved from there to The History of Byzantium and now like Byzantium and Friends - which is way more academic but I love the fact the professor just doesn't care if he has an audience or not, he just loves his subject sooo much.

I'd also highly recommend Dressed: A History of Fashion which yes, does cover lovely pretty clothes but so so much more as well. It's very wide ranging because after all, everyone wears clothes.

SallyMcNally · 10/10/2021 17:06

I've really been enjoying Fall of Civilisations on Spotify.

HugeAckmansWife · 29/10/2021 08:12

Ian Hislop did a 4 part one on R4 about the Anglo Saxon kingdoms. It was brilliant.. Called something like the Last Kingdoms and linked into the Bernard Cornwall series the Last Kingdom. They did Mercia, Wessex, Northumbria and East Anglia.

I don't listen to many podcasts, but this is great. I would recommend funtrivia.com for a quick history fix. It's fun to take the quizzes and then learn! I'm currently working my way through the true/false section.
