Ds 14 went to an art gallery with school last week and loved it. Now he's a teen we don't see much of him so I've offered to take him and dd (nearly 5) to a gallery in the 1/2 term.
Where do you think would be best, considering the age gap thing, dd is fairly well behaved in public and she does love looking at things, so am not worried about her behaviour. But it would be nice if there was something interesting for her too. She was rather fascinated with ds's book about picasso.

The Tate modern is fantastic.
The turbine hall always has an amazing installation which will impress a person of any age. Plus, you can catch the spotty boat up the Thames to the Tate Britain and see that one too, which is fun.
I took a friends 5 year old last summer, and it was great fun to get him to tell us what he could see in all the modernist (odd) paintings, and also getting him to talk through the painting was really funny. eg. asking him what he thought the man on the left was thinking or where the boat was going etc.
Lots of galleries have kids sheets with hints and tips for them to look for too.

where do you live?

we can't possibly answer this question till we know

or are you going to go away for a trip?

PeachesMcLean · 15/10/2007 14:00

Does it need to be London? Where are you?

Cammelia · 15/10/2007 17:54

Take them to the Millais exhibition at Tate Britain

claricebeansmum · 15/10/2007 17:55

The Millais would be good - there's lots to look at in the paintings for smaller DC and then lots of symbolism that DS and you can discuss

Thanks for that folks, had to attend to rl. Should have said, I'm in mid beds, so about 45 mins by train into london.
The tate (both)sounds like a good idea, are they terribly stuffy about small children?

Tate being terribly stuffy about small children

Our local gallery has an art trolley. Great for sitting small children down with whilst you look at the pictures.

I'd have a word in advance with your DD about not stepping over the rope barriers around the pictures but apart from that you should have a lovely time.

Peaches, that looks just the ticket, thanks for that link.
Dd is (mostly) fairly well behaved, more worried that she might be a bit loud in the 'oh look at that, mum' kind of way.
