Given that so many MNers loved the books, how come I haven't seen a thread about the film?

It stars Christopher Eccleston (who I can't abide) but he is somewhat disguised with long hair and a black scarf over his face (good move), so perhaps I could manage to watch it.

There was a little brochure in Dr Who magazine this morning - it does looks quite exciting.

Really, I didn't know they were making a film. I loved that book, much, much better than HP.

policywonk · 06/10/2007 12:31

But who is playing WILL??

TheDuchessOfCorpseBride · 06/10/2007 12:37

Ian McShane is Merriman
Frances Conroy is Miss Greythorne
CE is the evil rider
Alexander Ludwig is Will Stanton

And here is the imdb link.

Think Ian McShane would make a good Merriman, always imagined Will with curlyish hair for some reason.

policywonk · 06/10/2007 12:40

I guess my four-year-old will be too young for this atm . Can't quite face going to the flick to see it on my own. Where can I hire an 8 year old for a family outing?

ohhh, fab - didn't know about this. CAn see ian McShane as Merriman...

puffylovett · 06/10/2007 21:33

i can't see ian mcshane as merriman, don't ask me why ! Alwyas imagined someone tall thin and lanky with wild hair - bit like wotsit out of lord of the rings...

i bet the film won't do the book justice and I will have to pick holes and say 'That never happened' just like HP and get right on everybody's wick.

Another fun night out for DP ! LOL !

Habbibu · 06/10/2007 21:35

Ooh - just read IMDB reviews and really don't want to see it now - think I would get very depressed as I love the books. Will American? WTF?

JonesTheSteam · 07/10/2007 13:02

Have seen the trailer - it's been totally 'Americanised' and I can't bear the thought of watching it TBH!!

policywonk · 07/10/2007 13:06

Aaaargh, why do they DO these things. Surely the Cornish/Welsh parts of the story are just a leetle bit crucial?

roisin · 07/10/2007 13:12

I enjoyed the first book, but am reading The Dark is Rising atm, and am really struggling tbh. It just hasn't gripped me at all.

(DS1 and I have really enjoyed her more recent novels btw)

puffylovett · 07/10/2007 13:13

ooh no policywonk, don't you realise that king arthur and the hunt were actually american and we plagiarised them ???!!!!

Habbibu · 07/10/2007 13:50

Actually, I loved the books so much that I was always a bit scared of a film, if you know what I mean. I'm now almost relieved that it looks SO bad I won't want to see it. Roisin - stick with the Dark is Rising - it's worth it, and really key to the rest of the series.

PandaG · 07/10/2007 14:14

read the series years ago, can you remind me what age group they are suitable for? DS is 7, is reading Narnia atm. TIA

policywonk · 07/10/2007 15:32

Maybe a bit older Panda - I think I was about 10 when I read them.

constancereader · 07/10/2007 15:37

There was some conversation about this film on one of the book threads. It put me right off seeing it tbh. It sounds as if they have totally changed the spirit of the books. I am still passionate about this series even as an adult, so I am a bit upset they have bolloxed it all up

PandaG · 07/10/2007 18:29

THanks POlicywonk, will keep them for later.
