MaryAnnSingleton · 14/07/2007 16:52

paintings of tragic people usually, all smeary - for eg Princess of Wales/ the girl who died of overdose whose picture was in the papers after she'd died

And here.

Somewhat odd, not to say hideous paintings but also supposed to be disquieting and profound.

I do like them.

She makes a comment on high profile people and events with a certain irreverence.

Her paintings are like tabloid journalism done through the medium of art.

lionheart · 14/07/2007 19:15

So when the critics keep saying she's a bad painter do you think it's the art establishment closing ranks? Or is she a good bad painter?

Art is subjective.

The critics need to make a living, they like to be controversial.

Like what you like because you choose to, not because someone else says you should.

TnOgu · 14/07/2007 19:21

I have had bad reviews, but there are plenty of people who buy my work.

TnOgu · 14/07/2007 19:28

The art establishment throughout time have deemed certain artists as not having talent, etc.

They have often been proved wrong.

MarshaBrady · 14/07/2007 19:29

I happened to read a scathing review the other day. Someone even mentioned jack vettriano in the same article which I think is unfair.
Saatchi helped propel her work into the media spotlight ,and sometimes the artworld can embrace this or not imo
Her work is raw though, i like that
That and her own fame - and how she responds to it, which I find even more interesting.

TnOgu · 14/07/2007 19:32

Charles Saatchi is a wonderful patron of the art world.

He encourages emerging artists and gives them a real springboard for their talents.

MarshaBrady · 14/07/2007 19:38

Yes he does. No denying it, he is great for emerging artists.

lionheart · 14/07/2007 21:33

The artcile I was reading seemed to suggest their was hostility towards her because of her background.

article, even (too little sleep). Yes, I'd forgotten the Saatchi connection, perhaps that also helps account for the tone of the criticism (and the fact that she's female).

I have noticed a slight change in tone coming up to her next show. At first I thought the media did love her, and her work. But I agree lionheart criticism seems to be seeping in.
Where did you read it, was it the Observer?

lionheart · 14/07/2007 21:57

Must have been the Guardian today.
