Because dd is doing R&J at school (she's only 7 ) we watched a bit of this last night. haven't watched it for yonks. and GAWD it makes me tingle. couldn't stop myself crying when they first see each other through the fish tank at the party. I think it's an incredible film

I loved the movie. I thought it was very well done!

Marina · 29/06/2007 10:49

I think it is a classic
The negative of that Zeffirelli marshmallow should be burned and this version offered instead
Even that noodlehead Leo di Caprio is pretty good

RnBee · 29/06/2007 10:49

yes it is a great film!

Spider · 29/06/2007 10:49

It's fantastic isn't it? So well cast. So beatifully done. My DH loves it too and he's a big time Shakespeare enthusiast.

Spider · 29/06/2007 10:51

Marina Leo is always brilliant. He just so happens to be a hearththrob too which has somewhat unfairly knocked his credibility as a serious actor.

Have you seen him in What's Eating Gilbert Grape?

bagsundereyes · 29/06/2007 10:51

I adored this film, even though DiCaprio normally makes me heave. But it was a shame the script was a bit abridge (if I remember properly - think Mercutio's speech is shortened).

sassy · 29/06/2007 10:55

I like this one too
But as an English teacher, it has bad points as well as good...good - kids love it, find it accessible etc. Bad - they inevitably write in their essays "...And then JUliet takes Romeo's gun and shoots herself." Doh!

MrsJohnCusack · 29/06/2007 11:09

I do think Leo is actually a very good actor
Do love this. the Zeffirelli one is utter pants

KaySamuels · 29/06/2007 11:11

I love this film - am gonna watch it tonight now!

hatwoman · 29/06/2007 11:16

i'm so glad it's not just me. I had a bit of fun with dd explaining about setting the same story in a different time. she was fine with the idea of them not wearing old fashioned clothes and using guns instead of swords but the difficult leap was age "they look about 14 you don;t get married at 14" "well in the olden days people sometimes did" "but this isn;t set in the olden days" how to explain that R&J just wouldn;t work if they looked 30!

One thing I don't like about it is the way it takes Juliet's entire 4th act (that is her act, we barely see Romeo) and turns it into a few lines so the camera can get back to adoring Leo. A pity - it wastes Shakespeare's marvellous writing and Claire Danes' talent, IMO. Slightly guilty of turning the film into 'Romeo and some chick he likes'.

schneebly · 29/06/2007 11:24

I am a huge fan of Baz Luhrmann!

Spider · 29/06/2007 11:24

Plus ca change then sassy.

DoubleBluff · 29/06/2007 11:26

Gosh haven't watched it for ages. Will drag it out tonight, as I loved it.

Louella37 · 29/06/2007 11:55

I was, and continue to be, amazed by this film. Compared to Zeffirelli, it comes out head and shoulders above.

It also makes the classic story so much more accessible to young people, which can only be a good thing.

hoxtonchick · 29/06/2007 11:57

one of my favourite films (& i am not really a shakespeare fan). fabulous soundtrack too.

alibag · 29/06/2007 12:03

I loved this film - love Baz Luhrman, love Claire Danes (did anyone see "my so called life"?) not so keen on li'l Leo but altogther = brilliant!

Jessicatmagnificat · 29/06/2007 12:57

I've got to stick up for the Zeffirelli version, even though I preferred the Luhrmann one. But I can't watch the Zeffirelli one without thinking of "Our Tune" which shamelessly nicked Nina Rota's beautiful score.
