A question for people who know classical music.

I have a large and eclectic collection of classical music CDs, but I don't know my way around it at all. I don't even remember what I've got, TBH, and don't really have the time or opportunity to listen to everything. I'm hoping someone can suggest some composers to look out for, or even specific pieces, to use as go-to-sleep music for ds2. Currently I have the radio on quietly as part of his go-to-sleep routine, and leave it on, to help drown out other household sounds. I want to find a piece of music that I can leave on continuous play and maybe fix it firmly in his mind as a sleep cue. He needs all the help he can get, and so do we!

If you can bear to wait till tomorrow I have, in my work iTunes, a sleepy chill-out mix we cobbled together for the last lab baby.
Picking the slow movements out of things works well - iirc the Mozart clarinet concerto has a good one.
The last movement of the St Matthew Passion has gone down well in the past too.

Ooh yes please MrsB.

I tried top hunt down similar but sometimes the same piece of music can vary on how it's played if that makes sense. I bought Classic FMs baby CD which has a good collection all played softly which I played from about 2 months for DS. Or have a look on amazon at the playlist on the cover and see if you have any in your collection that are on the CD?

well, what do you know, I've posted it before:

Marianne's Choral Chillout (lifted out of iTunes so formatting's a bit screwy):

Adagio 6:20 Bach Concerto for oboe & Violin
Contralto Aria 7:46 If my tears be unavailing St Matthew Passion (Disc 3/3)
Bruch Con For Vn & Orch No.1 in g, Op.26 9:09 Adagio
Contralto Aria 6:44 Have mercy, Lord, on me St Matthew Passion (Disc 2/3)
Mendelssohn Con For Vn & Orchin in e, Op.64 8:02 2nd movt: Andante
Chorale 2:28 O Sacred Head St Matthew Passion (Disc 3/3)
Clarinet Concerto in A: Adagio 8:54 Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Eine Kleine Nachtmusik
No. 13 Pifa 2:53 Marriner, St. Martin in the Fields Handel: Messiah (Disc 1)
No. 45 Air Soprano: I Know That My Redeemer Liveth Handel: Messiah (Disc 2)
Chorus 7:09 In tears of grief, dear Lord, we leave thee St Matthew Passion (Disc 3/3)

Thanks, both.

BTW, what's a lab baby?

We put on Palestrina masses, or the Cardosa requiem, or Bach motets!

MrsBadger · 05/06/2007 09:45

I work in a lab so when my colleagues have babies they are lab babies...

Palestrina also very good - the Goldberg variations are pretty nice too.

Victoria too - and we found Gorecki (Totus Tuus) hit the spot as well, as did The Photographer, Philip Glass.
That's a terrific playlist MrsB

Bach English Suites - DS loves the Glenn Gould versions poss cos they're v mathematical.

Lilymaid · 11/06/2007 21:30

Another Bach choice that works for me (on i-Pod commuting to work so why not for your ds2 going to sleep) is Goldberg Variations (as MrsBadger) - my recording is Glenn Gould again, but there are other good ones.
