I have a painting signed and dated J Teague 1907, of a pastoral english landscape. Long shot, but is this painter known to anyone?
I am fairly sure it is by a professional painter, or at least a trained amateur.

googling produces nowt, obviously!

ooh thank you Marina.

I am particularly fond of this painting, I bought it in a car boot sale for 2 pounds, and it depicts a river, cows and landscape park on a very hot afternoon. my own piece of edwardian england

Are you 100% positive about the spelling of the name? (eg is it printed on a label or just from the signature)? I only ask because when I've done cataloguing of art collections it's amazing how often what the initial cataloguer thinks it says is different from what it turns out to be & some artists have very illegible signatures.

Nightynight · 29/05/2007 22:28

thank you for checking, Marina.
I sort of suspected that would be the case when I couldnt find anything on the internet. Yet, everything about the painting says Professional.
I have several more paintings which are very good, but indefinably amateur, this one isnt, which is why it is so intriguing. I wonder if it was someone who went to art school, but didnt have a long career, eg got married, or something.

kathy, that is a good point, I thought the date was 1917 for ages, which puzzled me because it would have been painted in the great war. It was only when I hung it on the wall of our new house here, that I saw it in a different light and realised that it was 1907. I have tried to make something else out of the signature, but can only come up with Teague.

by the way, it is surprisingly difficult to sign ones name legibly in an oil painting!
