Anyone know this off the top of their head - so that I don't have to look?

Well, I've had a quick google and I can't find out.

The female character with the most lines is Rosalind in AYLI - that any use to you?

Beetrootccio · 26/03/2007 19:58

I'm still trying...can't find anything relevant. Have tried to find a list of Dramatis Personae by play but can't...

filthymindedvixen · 26/03/2007 20:01

OK, have bedtime stories to read.

webcrone · 26/03/2007 20:11

Trick question? All parts originally written for men (in frocks)...or are you looking for something with lots of female characters? Sorry - having a day of profound pedantry.

Possibly Macbeth - 7

Bink · 26/03/2007 20:16

Appears to be The Two Kinsmen

obscurity aside, it's the Romances, as you'd expect - Winter's Tale, Pericles ...

Nice question though. The interesting thing is the consistency - between 3 and 5 parts per play. Obviously connected to who they had available.

Marina · 26/03/2007 20:17

Off the top of my head I don't think any of them have more than five.

Ah - the most excellent Pericles has SIX, as has The Winter's Tale.

It is looking like one his last plays for you beety

Marina · 26/03/2007 20:18

X-posted with Mistress Binke

saltire · 26/03/2007 20:18

Macbeth has 6 i think!

DrMarthaMcMoo · 26/03/2007 20:19

Winter's Tale has 6.

Bink · 26/03/2007 20:19

I always thought that the Romances and their fascination with rejuvenation via the effect of young women (little girls, even) was about WS having a daughter. But maybe someone jolly exciting joined the company ...

Marina · 26/03/2007 20:23

that is very thought-provoking bink.
I know that I engage emotionally far more with the Romances now as a parent than I ever did as a teenager. I'm afraid in my callow youth I never really understood Hermione.

Bink · 26/03/2007 20:26

ah among my Many Theories is one about when you are allowed to engage with what Shakespeare.

Midsummer Night's Dream - any age from about 5
Romeo & Juliet - obvious. NB first reading by 16 at latest
Coriolanus - about 22. When you think you are cool and have got over your parents mucking up your life but you HAVEN'T
Antony & Cleopatra - well, just coming into that one now.

Marina · 26/03/2007 20:28

Bink, sometimes I think you are wasted in your job (although I am sure you are extremely good at it). You are a born educator IMO

Marina · 26/03/2007 20:28

So why did they persist in setting A & C for A Level in my day I wonder?
