Reading for a wedding?

DH has been asked to do a reading at a wedding. Middlebrow wanted. He'd rather have prose than a poem. I'd like it to be something we might conceivably have read ... part of me is wanting to dig through Mother's Milk, but I suspect it might be a wee bit cynical?

Lovely couple, we really like them.

Chelsea isn't my end, but I can travel, some.

littlelapin, those are more his thing, but probably not the image he wants to project.

oh, and fwiw we scoured Heinlein for wedding readings and there is zilch.
we are such geeks.

NotQuiteCockney · 18/02/2007 21:27

I was totally mad for Heinlein when I was a child, as was DH. But I think we have both outgrown it?

God, I used to really love him. Particularly Stranger, and The Moon is a Harsh Mistress. And Starship Troopers . Gah.

from the House at Pooh Corner (but it's a poem): (friends had another excerpt from W the P which I really liked, can't remember what it was though)

Wherever I am, there's always Pooh,
There's always Pooh and Me.
Whatever I do, he wants to do,
"Where are you going to-day?" says Pooh:
"Well, that's very odd 'cos I was too.
Let's go together," says Pooh, says he.
"Let's go together," says Pooh.

"What's twice eleven?" I said to Pooh,
("Twice what?" said Pooh to Me.)
"I think it ought to be twenty-two."
"Just what I think myself says Pooh.
"It wasn't an easy sum to do,
But that's what it is," said Pooh, said he.
"That's what it is," said Pooh.

"Let's look for dragons," I said to Pooh.
"Yes, let's," said Pooh to Me
We crossed the river and found a few -
"Yes, those are dragons all right," said Pooh.
"As soon as I saw their beaks I knew.
That's what they are," said Pooh, said he.
"That's what they are," said Pooh.

"Let's frighten the dragons," I said to Pooh.
"That's right," said Pooh to Me.
"I'm not afraid," I said to Pooh,
And I held his paw and I shouted "Shoo!
Silly old dragons!" - and off they flew.
"I wasn't afraid," said Pooh, said he,
"I'm never afraid with you."

So wherever I am, there's always Pooh,
There's always Pooh and Me.
"What would I do?" I said to Pooh,
"If it wasn't for you," and Pooh said: "True,
It isn't much fun for One, but Two
Can stick together," says Pooh, says he.
"That's how it is," says Pooh.

oh I really like the Ogden Nash one!

Lio · 19/02/2007 09:58

Califrau's father read the Ogden Nash one (at my request) at my wedding

Was a surprise for dh.

Tillyboo · 19/02/2007 20:36

Hi,
We chose this for our wedding, purely for the words. I think it's a beautiful, haunting reading. Neither my husband or I are religious but the words really meant something to us, especially the last line.

Enjoy !

Irish Blessing

May the road rise to meet you,
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
The rains fall soft upon your fields.
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of his hand.

May God be with you and bless you;
May you see your children's children.
May you be poor in misfortune,
Rich in blessings,
May you know nothing but happiness
From this day forward.

May the road rise to meet you
May the wind be always at your back
May the warm rays of sun fall upon your home
And may the hand of a friend always be near.

May green be the grass you walk on,
May blue be the skies above you,
May pure be the joys that surround you,
May true be the hearts that love you.

Marriage Advice
Jane Wells (1886)

Let your love be stronger than your hate or anger.
Learn the wisdom of compromise, for it is better to bend a little than to break.
Believe the best rather than the worst.
People have a way of living up or down to your opinion of them.
Remember that true friendship is the basis for any lasting relationship.
The person you choose to marry is deserving of the courtesies
and kindnesses you bestow on your friends.
Please hand this down to your children and your children's children.

We had this one at ours and I love it.

A DEDICATION TO MY WIFE
by T.S. Eliot
To whom I owe the leaping delight
That quickens my senses in our wakingtime
And the rhythm that governs the repose of our sleepingtime,
the breathing in unison.
Of lovers whose bodies smell of each other
Who think the same thoughts without need of speech,
And babble the same speech without need of meaning...

No peevish winter wind shall chill
No sullen tropic sun shall wither
The roses in the rose-garden which is ours and ours only

But this dedication is for others to read:
These are private words addressed to you in public.
