How long did it take? Did you get it published? What genre was it?

my sister has written four (three published, one comissioned, two more commissions pending,) and my brother has had four published.

My sister says it takes less time as you go on because you get better at it. The first one took her a year as she was also working so she did it in the evenings. Now it is her full time job and she is currently timetabling 3 months per book with a month off in between - and that is doing it 9-5 in the day and 8-11 at night - every night.

I thought it must be inteh blood, tried it and can't write. Like proof reading and discussing plots with my sister instead.

Talented family! Who are they published by?

DimpledThighs · 29/01/2007 13:45

my brother - hyperion (he's amercian)
my sister - black lace (oh you had to ask, you so had to ask! But her next commission is not them!)

if you want it as career you can get magazine articles and online stuff to keep you ticking over.

UnquietDad · 29/01/2007 14:12

Ah, yes, Black Lace - one-handed readers!
Seriously, though, I imagine it is good work as they produce so many of the things. Aren't a lot of the writers gay men writing under these flowery female pseudonyms (Constantina de Clementis and all that?...

You're going to think I know more about Black Lace than is good for a man of my age, but I once knew someone else who wrote for them.

Don't get it...

I did know someone who wrote for them. Apart from DT's sister. Who I don't know. He was a bloke, and he was gay, and he wrote under a pseudonym - as did many of them!

georginaA writes novels

DimpledThighs · 29/01/2007 14:34

My sister is not a gay man (AFAIK).

Pruni - they all start off as shite and then you keep going. My sister told me the 50% of the population is writing of thinking of writing a novel. I think the best thing is too crack on with it and write because you love it not because you want to be JK Rowling and you will really enjoy it.

DimpledThighs · 29/01/2007 14:35

should read '...is writing or thinking of writing a novel..'

you can see why my million pound novelist career slipped through my fingers!!!

My stepdad has written some. I have no inclination to write a novel whatsoever - sounds like too much dangerous-head-exploding concentrating for me. Enjoy correcting other people's stuff though.
