MN Choral Jury - how much info on a concert poster?

Once again I am making the posters for my choir's concert [labour of love emoticon].
The draft I'd done went:

[place, time]
MOZART
Solemn Vespers
Davidde Penitente
Symphony No. 36
[orchestra, conductor, soloists]
[ticket details]

I sent them out to committee for approval and have been sent the following suggestion:

[place, time]
MOZART
Vesperae solennes de confessore K.399
Davidde penitente K.469
Symphony No. 36 in C Major K.425 ?The Linz?
[orchestra, conductor, soloists]
[ticket details]

I politely enquired whether we needed to include the K numbers, long titles etc because of a performing rights thing and was told that it was just the 'right' thing to do.

Now, we have a loyal following of people on the mailing list, local musos, choristers' mates etc etc who get their info from other sources, so the posters are mainly to attract the general public and people who haven't heard of the choir.

Bearing this in mind, surely the point of a poster is to make the concert appealing and easy to understand, rather than complex and elitist?
This is why I work hard to make clear, attractive posters...

And who honestly needs K numbers to identify works? Put them in the programme, yes, by all means, but on posters and flyers?

so... AM I BEING UNREASONABLE?

You are right. They are wrong.

IMO of course.

TheArmadillo · 02/01/2007 14:41

DOn't know about the legal side but I would think yours was a better idea, because the other seems a bit overwhelming. If the information is on the programme anyway it seems silly to put it on the poster as well as it may put people off.

I don't remember seeing info like that on posters before and always have thought that the least you can get away with on them the more attractive they are.

Most people know works not by catalogue numbers, but by nicknames etc anyway don't htey?

I'm on your side

the last poster we did for the cathedral choir tour they did not put the long names, k numbers etc.

On posters, less is more.

This is why our posters are such rubbish. Too much info, too busy, too many fonts, unnecessary inverted commas, the lot.

I think you're right and they're wrong.

K numbers on the poster would put most people off. Nerdy anorak image will not pull in punters.

So you just tell 'em.

btw did you see Ken Branagh on t'box last night making film of Magic Flute?

MrsBadger · 03/01/2007 10:45

eemie, it's taped and awaiting an opportune moment...

any more for any more? Harpsi?

(NB have realised the perfect comeback argument for the committee:

'Would you put a BWV number on a poster for the St Matthew Passion?'

)

Maybe k numbers not necessary on the poster but I would put "in C major, The Linz" by the symphony as it differentiates it from all the others. (I don't see why k numbers should be considered elitist though - it's just the way Mozart stuff is numbered.)

I wouldn't bother wioth K numbers either. They are mainly meaningless to the people reading the posters ime.

Crotchety · 03/01/2007 18:20

Crotchety by name, crotchety by nature, although currently feeling a bit quavery
