and can help me with the following -

How much are ticket prices ?
How easy are they to get hold of ?

Am thinking of it as a present for parents for christmas but obviously if they are difficult to get hold of (esp. affordable priced tickets) then I don't want to promise them a trip and find out its impossible.

Thanks !

haven't been, just have known people who are in it

website here says general public bookings don't open til April! so maybe you need to join the mailing list to get earlier booking - still looks like it doesn't open til Feb though

you have to join a waiting list to join the Friends!

wheelybug · 26/11/2006 22:07

thanks MrsJC - I had seen the website but they don't give info on prices etc but the fact you have to join a waiting list to join the friends doesn't suggest that tickets are going to be easy to come by! I think we have been spoilt by a) my parents living close to Glyndebourne and b) me having worked in the box office there during my 'gap year' so for the last 10 years have got tickets through the box office manager but alas, he retired this year so thats why I thought I would try Garsington for something different but not sure it will work after all.....

you could try the ROH, the new booking season opened a couple of days ago so you may still get some reasonably priced tickets (if London is an option)

MrsJohnCusack · 27/11/2006 00:20

aah boo - thought you had prob seen the website - I was suprised about the waiting list!

I also found this little snippet online - "Glyndebourne's success has been emulated by several small country-house opera festivals in England. Garsington, near Oxford, is probably the best known - its tickets are sold out years ahead"

so doesn't sound too hopeful does it....can't find anything else out. I don't actually know how one gets tickets for these things without doing it through friends/connections because I've always been lucky enough to do it that way.

ROH sounds like a good idea if you can get to London.

thanks CD and Mrs JC (again !)

Will give up on the idea of Garsington. They are regualar go-ers to the ROH unforetunately (well fortunate for them !) so it wouldn't be something different.

Will just ask them what they want then think it might be easier !!

How about Grange Park? It's lovely, but I think that the tickets are quite hard to come by too

wheelybug · 27/11/2006 11:46

Not heard of that one CD - I will google - thanks !

Grange PArk is great too but again, tickets hard to come by.
Think there is also a small Garden Opera company which visits several places - hang on - here - they are supposed to be very good
And all the places like Kenwood, Hampton Court, Kew Gardens sometimes have brilliant stuff on amongst all the dross
oooh I love outdoor performances. I usually spend my summer playing in bandstands and at garden parties/public events - am really going to miss it this year.

wheelybug · 28/11/2006 20:12

thanks once again mrs JC - I have given up and ordered a strawberry planter which is what tehy asked for. However, I might keep an eye on the garden opera one for a birthday pressie as there was one v. local last year so might be an idea !

Thanks for all your ideas Mrs JC and CD.
