Today is the 21st birthday

I have just come home from the special birthday performance at Queens Theatre, London

It had the cast of 1985 as well as the 2006

Which included Colm Wilkinson and Michael Ball and they all sang

It was really DEFFO BRILL

It was being filmed so hopefully a DVD will be out soon

Anyway later on today on Radio 2 @ 1pm Elaine Page has a special show

And then @ 7pm on radio 2 there is a special concert version of the show, recorded a few weeks ago.

Elaine Page came on and sang "Midnight" and handed the coat to Cossette {little one} to signify the handing over of the crown of the longest run of a show ie 21 years.

The atmosphere in the theatre was amazing

It was really deffo brill

here is the cast list from 1985

What did you do?

Did you act/sing in West End or behind the scenes?

Do your DC want to go on the stage when they are older?

We aren't that lucky we end up paying top price for the best seats, but it is something we love to do as a family and get withdraw symptoms if we don't go to West End for a few months. Would rather pay more money for best seats than less for ones at the back or high up in gods.

We drive into London and are home again within 40 minutes

Unless we go with friends and so get group discount and still get good seats. If we are organized and book early enough.

UlySCREAMS Yes it was

The atmosphere was sooooooooo deffo brill

We got covered in paper ticker tape and gold ribbons at the end

I just wish I was better at taking photos I get too excited and they come out blurry

i am an assistant director so work on some of the big shows. not really musicals though.

I don't know what my kds will do. So far there is talent but withluck they will do something else and jsut enjoy the acting singing playing as a side line

RTKangaMummy · 08/10/2006 20:08

WOW

I think DS will do it in local amateur theatre I think it prob is too hard to do as a job

Plus he needs a well paid job to keep his mother in her old age

Do these actors in the west end shows earn very much if they are headlining the show?

What kind of salary do they get?

£20,000 or £30,000 or £40,000 or £50,000

I have no idea if they are rich or poor if they are in a lead part.

OP posts:
RTKangaMummy · 08/10/2006 20:10

Or nearer £100,000

OP posts:
beetroot · 08/10/2006 20:14

no they don't get paid nearly that much. about 10 grand for a top liner with a percentage

RTKangaMummy · 08/10/2006 20:21

Blimey !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

SO if you are the main lead you only earn £10,000 + a % of the bookings

Crikey that is not enough to keep his mother in the manner she has become accustomed

Why do they not get paid more?

I mean a full theatre with the public paying £50 to £25 per ticket

Where does it all go then?

Hope they get a big %

OP posts:
beetroot · 08/10/2006 20:23

sorry PER WEEK

RTKangaMummy · 08/10/2006 20:24

pmsl

OP posts:
beetroot · 08/10/2006 20:25

someone like Maggie Smith would get 10 ish grand but the leads in Les Mis would not get anything near that s they are not names

RTKangaMummy · 08/10/2006 20:26

That is better

I was thinking that is madness

I was thinking how can they live on £10,000 a year

Do you know how the children would have been chosen for last nights special performance and for the radio one?

When we were waiting to go in one of the other Gavroches was coming to watch? Cos Jon Lee {Marius} came out and was chatting to him.

The one who did it last night was really good

So do they draw his name out of a hat or is he chosen cos he is the best one

Esp if he will be on the DVD and so will have had his performance down in History for everyone to see him?

OP posts:
beetroot · 08/10/2006 20:34

my guess is that it would have been chosenout of a hat. unless there is one who is particulalry good,

my ds1 would be fantastic in that part!!

MrsMuddle · 08/10/2006 20:39

I've just sat in the dark and listened to the Radio 2 concert. It was fabulous.

RTKangaMummy · 08/10/2006 20:41

When DS went for the audition he was too tall really

And the one last night was really tiny

They have to be under 4' 7"

Send them to KIDS CLUB DS loved it

we live in Somerset though so It is not really feasible. and boys sing as well!

RTKangaMummy · 08/10/2006 20:48

Could he board with one of the housemums or whatever they are called that the children stay at?

Like the boys in Billy Elliot?

I have friends he could stay with but he is a chorister so sings every weekend so it is rare that I can get him to do stuff like that

Just seen thread - am that you managed to go Sat night. By the time I realised it was the anniversary all the seats had sold out. Am now putting it in my diary for the 25th anniversary! BTW I saw the original production but only once it had transferred to the Palace. Funny that Caroline Quentin was in the original chorus - I remember her mentioning it in an interview a while back. The last time I saw Les Miz was ages ago, and then in Swedish (I was in Stockholm on business). I think I'm due for another trip.
