Wembley gigs scrapped after delay

Bon Jovi were due to play at the stadium in June
Four concerts planned to be held at the new Wembley Stadium will no longer be staged there as the venue will not be finished on time, the BBC has learned.
US rock band Bon Jovi were due to be the first band to play at the rebuilt stadium on 10 June.

Take That, Robbie Williams and the Rolling Stones were also due to play over the summer.

A spokesperson for Take That said the reformed boy band's shows would be moved to the Milton Keynes Bowl.

The stadium project has been beset with problems and is already over budget and more than six months behind schedule.

The FA Cup final, which was due to be the first event staged at the stadium, was moved to Cardiff after it became apparent building work would not be completed.

Bon Jovi were the last band to play at the old Wembley Stadium before it shut down in 2000.

Lead singer Jon Bon Jovi had been hopeful that despite delays they would be able to perform at the stadium on their summer tour of the UK.

It is believed the Bon Jovi gig on 10 June will be moved to the Twickenham Stadium, which is home to English rugby, although this has not been confirmed.

The original completion date for the stadium had been autumn 2005, with the deadline first extended to the end of January and then the end of March. There is still no official date for when it is due to open.

Concerts cancelled due to Wembley delay
(Filed: 30/03/2006)

Four major concerts scheduled for the new Wembley stadium have been moved elsewhere because the venue will not be ready.

Work continues on Wembley
Bon Jovi shows on June 10 and 11, and Take That concerts on June 24 and 25 have been switched to the Milton Keynes Bowl. A statement on the Bon Jovi website said: "After contact with Wembley it is evident that the Stadium will not be ready for the Bon Jovi shows in June."

The official deadline for the hand-over of the stadium will be passed tomorrow but the Football Association is still waiting to hear when building work will be finished.

The construction company, Multiplex, is due to make an announcement on progress to the Australian stock exchange.

The FA has already decided to hold the FA Cup final on May 13 in Cardiff and contingency plans are in place to hold the Community Shield on August 13 there too.

Meanwhile, the Rugby Football League is expected to turn to Twickenham if, as expected, Wembley will not be pronounced ready to hold the Challenge Cup final on August 26.

Further summer concerts are scheduled for Wembley, with Robbie Williams and the Rolling Stones both due to play. It was unclear tonight whether they would be able to play.

The Stones are down to play two shows in August, while Williams is due to play five nights in September.

Multiplex has already admitted to a £106 million loss on Wembley but says that includes all the penalty clauses it will have to face for missing the hand-over.

Problems have continued to mount for Multiplex. Stadium contractors have been holding talks with unions in a bid to avoid hundreds of workers being laid off in a pay dispute. Workers were sent home for a day last week after a roof beam collapsed. There have also been problems with the sewers under the 90,000-seat stadium.

At least it looks like they will still go ahead, although in different locations. What a nightmare though.

RTKangaMummy · 30/03/2006 20:13

But what will happen with tickets

I wanted to go to Wembley not Milton Keynes

Will they give refunds?

I would expect so as it is a fundemental change to the show isn't it?

I suspect you'd be able to sell your tickets - probably still for a tidy profit - regardless though.

RTKangaMummy · 30/03/2006 20:15

I guess so

But I don't know anything about ebay etc.

I HAVE JUST FOUND THIS ON THE SEETICKETS WEBSITE Smile

What happens if an event is cancelled or rescheduled?
As soon as an event is officially cancelled we’ll contact you via the contact details you gave us when you booked your tickets. We’ll then explain what happens next, usually a choice between attending a rescheduled event or getting your money back.
