Following on from dd's current interest in self-portraits I'm taking her to see the Frida Kahlo exhibition at the Tate Modern this weekend before it closes.

Has anyone been and did you like it?

I meant to take dd (7) but was put off by the bombs. She loves this book about Kahlo's life, 'Frida' - shame the link doesn't show the cover pic, the illustrations are really good.

Ooh yes, I like her too. I didn't know about this though - I try to get to the Tate whenever I can.

I know it's a bit corny, but did anyone see that film about her with, I think, Penelope Cruz?

suzywong · 19/09/2005 16:19

Salma hyak it was

now you see what I won't admit to on the other, "what do you lke about Australia thread" is that I bloody miss the galleries. I used to love letting ds1 raom around the National at full pelt and I wouldn't mind some visual culture myself

I am very fond of Diego Rivera, Frieda's long time lover myself

Love Frida Kahlo. Have been desperate to take daughter to this exhibition but just haven't got there

Cam · 19/09/2005 16:55

Thanks for your reply Batters - so the gory ones are the most appealing

Looking at all the posts we could have the makings a of a mother and daughter art gallery meet up here sometime

A mother-daughter gallery meet up would be lovely.

spidermama · 20/09/2005 21:26

I'd love to take my dd to see that. Does it close this weekend then?

sharklet · 20/09/2005 21:29

Ohh a mum and dd gallery meet, that sounds like a lovely idea - my DD is getting into seeing new things. The more galleries I can take her to the better.

Cam · 21/09/2005 13:03

spidermama it closes on 9th October.

Shall we look out for the next suitable Tate exhibition (Modern or Britain) in the future to meet up for with our dd's then?

Any suggestions welcome

What a good idea Cam.
I'll keep an eye out. I also want to see the revamped National Gallery.

Yeah, I took ds (5, almost 6) to see it a couple of weeks ago when my former boss was reading her poems (written in Kahlo's voice) at a Tate event open to the public. Ds, who (granted) has had a lot of exposure to art, LOVED the exhibition but immediately fell asleep when the poetry reading began . I think there's a lot in the art that can appeal to a child. .. there are a lot of interesting objects to pick out (eg unusual fruits, birds and flowers), and the surrealism gets their imaginations going, I gather. Warning: there's a highly graphic painting of Kahlo giving birth to herself. (I'm told Madonna owns that painting.) Legs wide open, lots of blood, etc. . .so maybe be prepared for questions. Quite a few paintngs in that particular room are a little scary/violent, so maybe be a little cautious if you have sensitive little ones--with that one room, anyway.

Well, enjoy!

Well, we finally saw the exhibition yesterday and I can really recommend it to anyone who hasn't yet seen it to go before it closes on 9 October.

I found it very powerful and moving - the paintings are out of this world - and her whole background and the politics of her time are fascinating.

dd spent 2 whole hours glued to her audiotalk as she moved (very slowly) around the gallery, I'm amazed at her powers of concentration - and yes I did get some questions with reagrd to the "gory" room.
