Truth or Myth??
Have just finished it and am now going to plow my way through all the counter-Da Vinci books who are out to dispel Dan Brown's theory.
What do you think???

Fiction.

Plausibly presented - and I believe Brown believes his own theory - but guff IMO!

Quite a good read tho.

Thought provoking! And yes it's fiction but who are we to say that a book written hundreds of years ago around which a whole religion is based isn't fiction either.

sassy · 29/08/2005 12:21

Oooh, contraversial, pagan!

LIving up to your name I see!

dropinthe · 29/08/2005 12:21

Understand it is fiction but am still intrigued and plan to Google alot of the references.Has anyone here been to the Louvre?

OP posts:
Pagan · 29/08/2005 12:22

Hadn't thought of that . As Dave Allen always said "may your God go with you" which I always thought was a nice way to acknowledge all religions

expatinscotland · 29/08/2005 12:22

It's fiction. A good, entertaining read.

Papillon · 29/08/2005 12:23

I like his books... tourists now flock to see the portrait of Mona Lisa and not the Louvre.. was an article about it in the newspaper afew months back - just because of his books.

He has taken historical references, like the existence of the illumanati, Jesus and Mary Magdalane and woven his myth and storytelling around it.

There are alot of books (and websites) out there about it all. Hard as a back seat driver to really know if the illumanati are still active.

There is a shop in my town called ´The wind rose´...that means alot more to me now that I have read his book. Its a cystal shop run by a very cool woman.

I just recently read Angels and Demons another of his books.

Although I've not been myself all my family have visited Rosslyn Chapel - it's pretty impressive by all accounts and out of character with other places of worship the same age

Yes,I REALLy want to go there-I remember my Mum taking me to Salisbury hill when I was younger and mentioning something about the Grail being near there. There is some kind of monumnet on the top I recall-or a building of some sorts.I just want to visit the various places mentioned in the book just to see the architecture now-first visit may have to be Westminster Abbey as I live in London so a good place to start.

in-laws have visited the Rosslyn Chapel and read the book all about it.

Fiction.

Even Dan Brown doesn't try to claim otherwise. He just knew there was money to be made with a good plausible tale.

Really enjoyed the book but prefered Angels and Demons.

Chandra · 29/08/2005 13:50

Fiction definitively, dissapointing ending though (well at least I found it lame considering how interesting the rest of the book was)

Chandra · 29/08/2005 13:52

Such a good "plausible" tale is making loads of money in terms of tourism . Having said that, I would like to visit Rosslyn, not because I beleive there some element of truth in Brown's book, but because it would make a nice change to see a church that looks a bit different.

dropinthe · 29/08/2005 13:53

I would love to believe it had some basis in reality though-that's me-ever the romantic!

Cheers Pruni! There are quite a few I think I will have to purchase from Amazon to get a clearer picture.

I haven't read it but isn't The Da Vinci Code just Foucault's Pendulum dummed down?

The french bloodline, jesus, the masons and all that?

flamesparrow · 30/08/2005 13:55

Fiction, but good thought provoking fiction.

The consipiracy theorist in me loved it

monkeytrousers · 30/08/2005 13:57

Oh yes Pruni, the Holy Blood and the Holy Grail, I read that years ago. Getting them mixed up (Sorry Umberto!)

Toothache · 30/08/2005 13:59

Fiction..... with a grain of truth slung in there for good measure! LOVED THE BOOK. I don't follow any religion.... but IMHO Dan Browns theory that the bible was more a political decision to help 'rule' over the masses and that Jesus was a mortal man who did fantastic things is FAAAAAAAAAAAAAAR more believable than the church's story.

myturn · 30/08/2005 13:59

A great read, but all fiction IMO.
