Dhs half sister is staying for a few days at the end of the summer, I thought it would be nice to take her to a show, these 2 are the ones I found but any other ideas would be welcomed thanks

The Railway Children. My dc (eldest is 9) would love it, whereas the noise level of Grease would overwhelm them. They wd also follow the plot of TRC much better than the more adult themes of G.

Where is TRC on? I might take mine to it!

the waterloo theatre ( in the old eurostar terminal ) sounds good, it has a real steam train !

The railway children was on at york railway museum a year or 2 ago, we went (ds 7 and well into trains, dd 10 & not!) & we all loved it. I'm pretty sure that its the same show on at waterloo and i'd strongly recommend

Saw the Railway Children last weekend - it was FAB! I loved the book as a 9yo girl and ds (7) loved the play. Very special being set in an actual station on real platforms with a real engine (although personally I thought the effects they use to suggest big express trains rushing past before they bring the actual engine on were even better). And I think it's a classic story with huge appeal for 9yo girls (and boys).

I cried, twice! (Once when the Russian refugee finds his wife and child, once at "Daddy, my Daddy!")

In theory Grease's plot is wholly inappropriate for a 9 year old (although my entire class was taken to the original film as a school treat aged 8 - one teacher objected strongly, and when we innocently asked him why he found that he couldn't explain without pointing out all the sexual stuff we'd missed).

An alternative would be Lion King (brilliant apparently) - Hairspray's not on in London anymore unfortunately.

I think I'm going to give Railway Children a go.

I would also say railway children. grease the musical has some adult undertones, doesn't it??? I don't know, been a lot time since I saw the stage version, but I seem to recall that that was the case.

Have heard Lion King is good but it's been on for years and presumably will be around a lot longer - Railway Children finishes in September IIRC and is FAB.

ok you've convinced me - will be booking tickets.

I have also had Lion King highly recommended for children but there is something magical about going to see TRC at Waterloo.

Sorry old thread - but anyone know if this would be suitable for a 5 year old birthday party? Wondering if he would be bored?

Turniphead1 · 16/09/2010 14:32

By that I mean bithday trip - DS plus 2 chums (all fairly mature for their age)?

blackisthisyearspink · 16/09/2010 14:38

The railway children. I wouldn't take dd to see Grease just yet, it does have some adult themes.

Railway children is supposed to be spectacular. It has been extended to January.

Lion King is fantastic too as is Wicked (of course)
