Anyone listening? Thoughts?

Spoiler alert. It's immediately got my hackles up.

I agree. I've listened to the first two and found it not very revelatory. Elizabeth Day gushes endlessly, her co-hosts give quite basic information. As with ED's other podcast, I get the impression she's desperate to be liked and she fan girls her guests to an exhausting extent - the format of HtF lends itself to something more insightful than this series though. I'm not sure I'll keep going with it.

PurpleChrayn · 25/08/2024 19:29

I can't BEAR Elizabeth Day. She reminds me of every desperate middle-class teacher's pet at uni.

PullUpTheDrawbridge · 25/08/2024 23:01

So far, so true. She is a massive suck up.

But it's not just that. There's also do I h waffle, nothing new. Despite loads of chat of being controversial and real,

"“I think that you can almost say anything, but it depends on how it lands. And if it lands in a way that is intriguing and you have that moment, tell me more moment, then it's obviously a good idea.

If someone's recoiling from your idea, then it's not a good idea.”

Really? REALLY? Stop press. No way! 🙄🙄🙄

I hate the way they are all mystifying and over thinking writing too. Lots of chat about being struck by full formed characters who speak to you. And 'just knowing' as agents cos we're natives

I suppose I come from more of a grounded POV. I've had 3 books published by one of the 'big 4´ publishers and not one of them landed fully formed in my lap in a burst of inspiration. Or been accompanyied by any mystical magic. It was much more about graft, and craft and grinding out the words. Not something that left much time for navel gazing or a "moral quandary around ideas" 🥱

Ha - I was trying to think of some of the advice given, which, yes, is completely anodyne, but I listened two or three weeks ago and couldn't remember any. It's because it's like this. All delivered, iirc, with a drumroll and followed by a gasp of gratitude from ED.

lemontart13 · 27/08/2024 20:40

The podcast feels like a lot of fluff and not much substance. I've been writing for years and it's hard work, not magic. Would love to hear more practical advice and less navel-gazing.

Elizabeth Day is possibly the most annoying and sycophantic person I’ve ever come across. So I’ll give this a miss.

Aww come one, it's a unique opportunity, need to experience this at least once in a life time haha

I like the writers routine podcast, the host interviews different authors each week and they basically say 'get on with it' 😄 but it's really interesting listening to all the different habits people have and how everyone might have different journey to get there, but the basics always come back to.....get on with it!

NavyDeer · 01/09/2024 07:59

I nearly signed up to an online writing class, but it was quite expensive and the main thrust seems to be: get on with it, and edit heavily.
We all just want that magical inspiration, don't we?

@PullUpTheDrawbridge Elizabeth Day did the How To Fail podcast too. I found it fairly useful at one time. I might give the one you mention a go just to see if it's just the thing to make me get on with it! Will report back 😎

Saltysea2001 · 01/09/2024 08:36

Also can’t bear ED, for all the reasons set. I do really enjoy listening to Zadie Smith being interviewed - so put aside my reservations to listed to ED interview her. Enormously satisfying as clear that ZS doesn’t like her interview style or her writing.

Birdsaremyfriends · 02/09/2024 13:50

I'm so happy to see this thread as I was looking forward to this podcast but I just couldn't listen to it. So trite.

AppropriateAdult · 02/09/2024 18:55

I love writing podcasts, but I find ED hard to listen to too, for much the same reasons. Hattie Crissell has a great writing podcast, where she just gets out of the way and lets interesting people be interesting - the difference is stark.
