If you write, and work part-time, how do you manage?

I know a writer who does casual work in pubs and hospitality, another one is a teacher.

PieFaceAndLovingIt · 06/10/2023 19:45

That made me laugh, thank you !!!😅
I'm currently applying for teacher training (secondary English).I do have part-time care work, which has, surprisingly, destroyed any inkling to attempt to write. 😆

I have reduced my hours in my salaried job and have increased sports trading which was previously a side gig. I’m aiming to quit the salaried job by next February and fully support myself sports trading and that will give me time for more creative outlets such as writing. Not for everyone though!

I'm a graphic designer with a degree in creative writing. I basically only write in my spare time now.

I and pretty much every writer I know teaches writing at a university, PT or FT. I won't pretend teaching and admin aren't time-consuming, but your job does actually require you to write and publish, and obviously your work feeds your teaching too.

Though some writer colleagues in a previous university job expressed a desire to be postmen -- the logic was that (1) the job kept you fit, (2) you started early and finished early (3) the more efficient you were, the earlier you finished work for the day, (4) you had the rest of the day to write, and (5) were able to leave the job at work (which isn't true of academia).

A friend of mine ages ago used to work as a garbage man every morning and then spent the rest of his day writing. But this was in New York back in the '80s. I don't know if that's feasible now.

PieFaceAndLovingIt · 12/10/2023 15:56

Not at my age, although I did consider something similar a few years ago 😮
I think I'm going to have to consider going back to community care (as opposed to residential care) so I can be walking outside in all weathers, exercising at the same time, and ditch the idea of all the stress and unending admin of teaching and other career options I've decided not to pursue. Its now or never for me now, if i do this, I have nowhere to hide as i'll have time to write everyday. Fingers crossed ...😎

I work for the Tube & we have a few part-time staff who are writers.

Grammarnut · 15/10/2023 11:09

Teaching used to be good as you did not work (nor are you paid for if you look carefully at your contract - it's 1265 hours plus some directed time you are paid for) and you could write then. However, teaching is becoming very difficult both because of behaviour issues in schools and the work load. Primary is probably better - still a huge workload - but the children are nicer. Wouldn't recommend it.

ChaoticCrumble · 23/10/2023 19:47

I think it's best to have a job that doesn't involve writing - which sounds obvious, but I do quite technical writing in my day job (which is otherwise quite good for part-timers) and then I really struggle to do any creative writing in the evening.

When I had jobs doing stuff like website help, which didn't use my creative brain at all, I was writing all the time!

StellaOlivetti · 23/10/2023 19:52

I agree, @ChaoticCrumble . I don’t think I would have been able to, say, teach English, or write technical articles etc all day, then come home and write, but I was able to work a day in my NHS nursing role and write at night. It must be a different part of your brain.

Madhairday · 31/10/2023 15:43

I'm an editor and format and design books for indie authors.

localhere · 25/06/2024 07:52

I'm a copywriter and social media manager.

PurpleChrayn · 25/06/2024 08:52

I'm a copywriter/editor/proofreader and I also run an online literary journal. It pays the bills while allowing me to call myself a writer while not making a living from my novel and poetry!
