It helps to have a plot or a character in mind first. What do you want to write?

Start at the very beginning... a very good place to start :)

Novels usually start with a change - a death, a marriage, change of residence, new school etc i.e. the main character(s)' life has changed in some way. Unless your novel is absolutely contemporary you will need to do some research on the where and the when (don't assume that setting it in the future makes this unnecessary - some physics etc will probably be necessary as well as conditions for life, ditto a fantasy world where you will have to do world building: Tolkein and le Guin are good on doing this and worth consulting). Some writers like a blueprint (don't treat it as gospel) some prefer to wing it - if winging it a very strict revising must ensue as winging it tends to lead to anomalies, inconsistencies and (worst of all) mistakes in chronology and character. Blueprint guide is better. However you work your first draft is just that, and will need substantially revision, re-writing, cutting (often of 'favourite bits') and editing. It's fun. Go for it.
