Do you buy paperback books?

I would like some indication of how many people still buy a physical book, in preference to an e book.

Don't have a kindle. I buy books regularly (new and second hand, hardbacks and paperbacks). I read everyday.

Yes. I have a kindle but only use it for holidays.

I bought 13 (second hand) books yesterday! The perils of going to a huge book sale. They were only 50p each though, so far cheaper than a kindle...

Paperbacks all the way!
that is a mix of new books, occasionally hardbacks , from favourite authors or books I can’t wait to read, book swapping with friends, books from library, charity shop.
Can’t stand ebooks and it’s great to take the eyes away from a screen

LadyKenya · 30/10/2022 08:53

I love buying books. I could not imagine ever buying an e book.

ohforthelife · 30/10/2022 08:53

Sometimes, usually for myself only if they're on offer but I buy them for gifts.

SuperlativeOxymoron · 30/10/2022 08:53

Quite frequently. It was my birthday at the start of the month and I got Waterstones vouchers, used them to buy 6 books, 4 paperback and 2 hardback.

I do have a kindle, however I only buy the free books/less than £1 deals as I resent paying for books that way. Illogical I know.

FeralWitch · 30/10/2022 08:54

I’ve got a room with one wall completely shelved. It’s almost full. Books are probably the love of my life, and I hope to die with one in my hand.

So yeah, I buy ‘em Grin

Soubriquet · 30/10/2022 08:56

When I was a teen I did have a kindle. Or rather a kobo. But the bloody thing died and all the books I bought on it disappeared.

This is the major reason why I buy proper copies

junebirthdaygirl · 30/10/2022 08:57

Lots and even more when l am going on holidays even though it hardly make sense carrying them. My idea of a nightmare is running ot of books on holidays! Also like audio books. My dc in their 20s buy books too.

I don't know about Kobo, but if your Kindle dies, all the books on it are stored in the cloud. At least I hope so, as my own Kindle is very slow and I'm thinking of replacing it.

Kobo was the Waterstones brand. And it was years ago now. I have long since replaced them all with hard copies

mileaminnie · 30/10/2022 09:16

I use à kindle now. Currently reading a book every two days so I just wouldn't be able to keep up with paperbacks!

Stuffthisstuff · 30/10/2022 09:20

Much prefer to hardbacks, never listen to audio. I do buy for Kindle but rarely finish them as I just don't engage with them the same way. Trying to get rid of my books slowly and just keeping absolute favourites, would love to get back to using a library but there isn't one near me .

HermioneWeasley · 30/10/2022 09:26

Yes, much prefer a physical book

RockyOfTheRovers · 30/10/2022 09:38

I prefer Kindle for holidays and for reading at night, but buy paperbacks a lot for day time reading for anything I’m going to want to share with people (particularly anything that can go to the school library as soon as I’ve read it).

IncompleteSenten · 30/10/2022 09:40

No. I haven't bought a book in years. I use my kindle.

WildCherryBlossom · 30/10/2022 16:01

I love paperbacks. I do buy then and have shelves and shelves full but lately I'm using the library a lot more to save money and space.

solarsystem87 · 06/11/2022 17:55

I find there is no real substitute for paperback books. Just the feeling of holding a freshly printed book in your hand for the first time, feeling the pages and smelling the smell is irreplaceable. For books that are important to me, I always make sure that I also own them as paperback books and can put them on my shelf.

But I have to admit that for a few years now, for practical reasons, I've been reading almost exclusively e-books. Especially with a small child, I find it very practical to be able to read on my reader in the dark while my child is falling asleep.

Bbq1 · 06/11/2022 18:01

Yep, only buy physical books. I would never ever want a kindle. Nothing beats holding a book in your hand. It's a whole sensory experience. I read a book a week on average so I'm always buying them.

lollylimejuice · 06/11/2022 18:10

I always buy paperbacks and hardbacks. If I haven't got a stash of 6 or 7 waiting to be read, I get panicky and order a batch from amazon. Best experience ever was ordering 36 books in a series. I was so happy.
