Diversity for Childrens Books

Hi all,
I've had an idea that I'm in love with for a series of children's books. Age ranges from baby to around 7 years old.
I've been thinking of it for well over a year now and really am at the point where I want it out of my head and in a book.

Here is where I get stuck every time. I want the book to be as inclusive as possible as I hate the thought of it being read and when references to say 'mum and/or dad' are made, or writing about children running etc the person reading it (or being read to) is saddened that this doesn't apply to them.
But without these, I'm struggling to portray what I feel I need to in the book.

So my question is, am I overthinking this? Or am I right to be taking these into consideration? I'm finding the book much more difficult to write because of this and I'm worried I'll just never end up moving forward with it!

Any and all advice appreciated greatly!

you’re overthinking it.
you can introduce some side characters that are diverse/ have different opinions/ experience.

Totally overthinking it 🤷🏻‍♀️

Pick an idea or 2. You can't cater for everything.

We have a book called "all are welcome"

Kids every colour, different religions, gay parents, blind kid, wheelchair.....

But they are all healthy, they all go to school. That is something that some kids may not experience ever

Way overthrowing. You its a series...can you make the series as a whole more diverse?

Way overthinking I mean!

I think the diversity in children's books, unless a book designed to teach kids about diversity, is usually best achieved over a range of books.

I have a book called families families families that is all about different types of families that is a good example of a book about diverse family situations.

@lentilly Couldn't agree more with this. It seems nearly impossible to try to diversify to an extreme degree in one children's book. Especially if it's for ages 0-7. It'll more than likely be a picture book which are typically 24 or 32 pages which isn't long and you risk losing a great story in the pursue of stock piling virtues. Best to do that work over a longer series of books as opposed to the one book!

Also (if this is the right author) I'm checking out your book now! LOOKS GREAT! I may order the hardcover on Amazon and give it a closer look! :)
