Short story writers!

Hello. I have been writing short stories for a while but no idea how to (or if) get them published. Those of you who have, could you tell me how you approached this? Also has anyone done the ICE course in short stories? It looks really interesting but rather expensive. Thanks!

Great to see a fellow short story writer on here! I've been lucky to have had a fair few published in the past two years, mostly in US magazines. When I started out I submitted more or less randomly to different magazines but then read about doing tiered submissions, which has helped my acceptance rate go up as well as got me to aim for those magazines I'd most like to be published in.

My advice would be not to submit to any magazines that don't accept simultaneous submissions unless they have a very fast response time or you feel really passionate about the magazine. It can take quite a few submissions sometimes to get an acceptance and if each magazines takes anywhere from 2 to 10 or more months to respond, it would take far too long if you only got to submit to one magazine at a time.

What genre do you write in? I don't know anything about the ICE course I'm afraid.

Thanks for the advice. I'll look into tiered submissions. I don't really have one clear genre as I have been trying out lots of different ideas. I suppose I really need to research the market. I read a lot of short stories but not in magazines! What genre do you write in?

www.bansheelit.com/submit

This is a highly-regarded Irish journal that accepts simultaneous submissions.

Also very prestigious, though I think it specifies no simultaneous submissions.

Both accept short fiction from international as well as Irish writers.

Some others on this list might be useful also, but check the publications' own websites to make sure the info is up to date.

Thanks! They both look interesting.

I'd suggest you start by submitting to the competitions in Writing Magazine, and reading their comments on the winners.

I don't know, but I'd imagine that short romance stories suitable for women's magazines would be slightly more saleable than other genres. If you have loads of stories in a variety of genres, you could compile them into books on Amazon.

Where do you read short stories, if not in magazines?

What's the genre? I've had tons of stories published and a collection. If your writing has any kind of genre bent I can tell you where to submit to magazines and anthologies. But also look for your local writing groups and the funded writing admin for your area (e.g. New writing north) and subscribe to all their newsletters and enter the big comps - Bristol, Bridport, Mslexia etc.
