Help me find a laptop that's nice to type with

Hello

Can you recommend laptops that have lovely nice to type on keyboards?

Doesn't have to be fancy just need to run word and surf the net and have a joyful keyboard!

No side number keyboard as it puts it all off centre.

I used to have a Sony VAIO which I loved- nothing as good since. Sad

I write a lot with my iPad and magic keyboard but Word doesn't function as well and I like a bigger screen at times.

Many thanks

I've got an ancient Toshiba. And the keyboard is lovely. I actually recently got a compliment about how nice it was to type on when my friend was setting something up for me. My DP has an even older Toshiba and the keyboard is really lovely to type with. So I'm saying that Toshiba apparently have nice keyboard action.

I've never considered Toshiba. I will have a look thank you.

I get you.
I never thought about this until I had to use my DHs old laptop. The keyboard is so much nicer to use than my new (very clicky and hard) laptop keyboard. I didn't consider it when I was buying.
I now use a manual typewriter.

MacBooks are good. I've got a five year old one that's nice, dp has a much newer one that is different, but also nice...

I'd love a MacBook but not sure I can justify the cost just for a nice keyboard... Grin

I dunno, there was a thread on here the other day where someone was saying they might as well have bought a mac for the money they'd spent on several rubbish windows laptops in the amount of time a MacBook would have lasted, tempt, tempt...

I write on my Macbook Air. I love the keyboard, the battery lasts for ages and it's so light I can write anywhere. I agree they are pretty pricey but there are loads of cheaper refurbs out there.

Laptop ergonomics aren't great for sustained use. Could you sit at a desk or table and use a USB or bluetooth full size and ergonomic keyboard and mouse hence decouple the laptop model from keyboard quality (depth of travel for the keys and suchlike?).

I lust after a Rytek keyboard. You seem to be able to plug it into your tablet / computer so that you can type as though on a keyboard. Drool drool swoon swoon swoon. I haven't actually touched one though so I don't actually know how good they are.

I have a Macbook, which we've had for a good five years and yes, it still runs brilliantly, but husband nicked it for his photography. It's a bit annoying to type though as there's no true delete key, just backspace, but I imagine that varies by model.

I have a chromebook which is brilliant for not getting clog-brain and slowing down, but but its brain has outlasted its body as its a bit cheap plastic. I did nanowrimo on it though and it was great as I could sneak it into work into the staff room.

I have scrivener on my asus vivobook which runs windows but it was affordable and the keyboard is very nice for typing on. As good if not better than our Sony Vaio which we bought in 2012 and which became quite quickly outdated (it's very heavy)

So long story short, asus vivobook for affordability. Rytek if you're a hipster. Macbook if you want true longevity. But if it's mostly for writing on, try to avoid going online on it and it will last longer as it will attract fewer cyber diseases.

Having said all of that, scrivener on the Mac was a whole world better than on Windows because the functionality is better on the Mac version. Moreover since you do get what you pay for, the screen on the Mac is an awful lot better than on anything cheaper, which I noticed when I switched - reading text on the Mac was so smooth (it's absolutely find on the vivobook but the mac... oh... husband, how dare you nick my mac)

@NouvelleMamanNouvelleVie fn + backspace is delete on a Mac. Not a delete key, true, but it does the job.

NouvelleMamanNouvelleVie · 04/02/2021 18:58

I find a delete key that deletes to the right invaluable, and the Mac doesn't have one. You have to press fn backspace to do it.

The MacBook Air is so pretty, my finger is hovering over 'buy' on the Apple store.
I want one!

Mine is an Acer Swift 1, it's a bit clicky to type on (definitely not silent!) but I really like it.

I have an HP Pavilion, but it is usually set up at home with a plugin keyboard and mouse. Some Bluetooth keyboards have a perceptible time lag.
I am now training the Speech Recognition, going more slowly than I expected. It is part of the Edge bundle.
Will also try a larger screen. I did try one and it was brilliant. You can have different tabs open and show different info on the screens.

Sorry if I just mansplained!

I have a Surface Pro for work and I really like the keyboard. It just feels easy to type on, the keys are very square and smooth and the bit at the bottom is soft. It can also be used as a tablet.
