I want to treat myself to a useful book I help with writing.

I already have Stephen king's book, a writers book of days and Patricia highsmith's book on writing suspense fiction.

My budget is £10.

Or even a subscription for a magazine!

Any suggestions?

Wired for Story or Story Genius by Lisa Cron. Either or both. Essential reading.

For novel structure I find Screenwriting tricks for authors by Alexandra Sokoloff extremely useful.

I love How not to write a novel - Mittelmark and Newman. Very funny and very true - and John Yorke - Into the woods.

I haven't heard of any of these but they sound very useful. Thanks- will look up!

Actually, I have Screenwriters on kindle but then bought the hard copy as it was that good. Worth the investment imo.

Monkeys with Typewriters by Scarlett Thomas is excellent. It's definitely the one I've found most helpful to date.

My recommendations come mostly from indie writing/publishing.

Take Off Your Pants by Libbie Hawker
Libbie writes historical fiction, both indie published and published by Amazon's Lake Union imprint. Her newest release hit the number one spot on Amazon's book sales chart the other day.

Fantasy Fiction Formula by Deborah Chester.
Not just for fantasy writers. Lots of info for writers of all types of fiction. This is the woman who taught Jim Butcher and he credits all his success to her. He was resistant to her teaching and thought she knew nothing, despite being a published author. So he decided to prove her wrong by doing exactly what she told him to do (expecting he would fail). He ended up writing the first Dresden Files book.

Brandon Sanderson's lectures at BYU are all available for free on YouTube.

Into The Woods by John Yorke.
More about story in general than novel writing, but useful.

The Perfect Story. JA Huss has a full series of videos on writing on YouTube. You can find it via her blog:
jahuss.com/the-perfect-story-free-ja-huss-fiction-course/

2k to 10k by Rachel Aaron.
Has three sections: writing faster, plotting, editing.
Rachel was trad published first but, when talking to someone at a convention, realised that indie authors who were selling less were making more money than her. So she started putting out some indie stuff of her own.

Angela Ackerman and Becca Puglisi have a series of reference books for writers.

Joanna Penn (writes thrillers as J F Penn) has a YouTube channel/podcast called The Creative Penn.

Mark Dawson, an indie author interviewed on BBC Breakfast a few months ago, also has a podcast. The SPF Podcast, I think?

Those are just a few off the top of my head.
