Would you let your 9-11 year old read a book that mentioned guns?

No violence or shooting or anything like that, but if there was, say, a soldier or an FBI agent or something like that who carried a gun, would you be ok with that?

Dora didn't Antony Horowich say something similar about his Alex Rider books. That the editor said Alex was fine going against guns but could not carry one himself, which was one reason why he gave him all the fun gadgets.

That's really interesting, thanks @DoraNora!

Yes! Don't be ridiculous!

DD's 10 and her class studied World War 2 last term, in fact, DS2's 6 and his class studied Florence Nightingale and the Crimean war last term!

If you'd said you were writing a book, I'd have put that slightly differently, sorry! Blush

But yes, even my 6yo's aware of wars and guns, so any parent objecting would be a bit pearl-clutchy.

Alongside less violent options like The Secret Garden and His Dark materials to be fair.

Have you read HDM???? Bloody brilliant books but definitely not non-violent.

I don't see why not, there's been a lot of talk about this new game Fortnite I think it's called. Whether parents need to police what their children play more. I don't believe video games, books, comics, will mean you programme your child into Mass Murderer mode from being in contact with such stuff.

Remember days of old when children would pretend a stick was a gun. They didn't want to hurt their friends, they were playing.

Unless there's papers that say otherwise.

On IG I see a family in Canada where the children go hunting. I believe they're pretty young.

Yeh sorry @PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks (great name) for some reason I just assumed everyone would be able to read my mind! Though TBH it's been just as helpful hearing people have strong reactions to the subject, not realising what I meant. Definitely no worries now about pushing on with the character I had in mind.

I look forward to seeing it on Amazon in the future! 😆

Thanks for the compliment on the name, I wish I could take the credit! 😂
