Studying MA as a single parent

Hi there, I'm considering applying to UEA to do the creative writing MA. I currently live in London and I'm a lone parent to a 2 yo and would need to move to Norwich for a year.

Has anyone else done this or something similar?

Thanks

I'm doing it online, my dc are a lot older. Wish I'd done it when they were small as you can get lots done in the evenings! Sounds an amazing opportunity UEA has a great rep

Thanks for your reply. Yes I'm trying to get it in before my son starts school as then you're pretty stuck.

What's it like doing it online?

No, I haven't done anything like that. But wish I had. Go for it and good luck if it's something you really want. It won't get any easier if you want for a few years, probably.

I am SO jealous! I wish I'd done that MA.

I did do an MA in Creative Writing at night over two years. I was a single parent and I had two teenagers. It worked well because they were becoming independent and I'd write when they were in bed (till lunchtime) or out with friends.

You'll have an absolutely fantastic time there and they have so many connections to agents etc. Best of luck!

So I'm not totally crazy then! I work full time in an office in London and feel stuck in a rut. Each day is a monotonous slog and I'm bored stiff.

I've got a degree in English literature which I really enjoyed doing so seems like this could be a good idea.

Online is OK but I think full or part time is much much better if you have the chance. How exciting!

I did my undergrad as a single parent with a toddler! Definitely hard but amazing, moved my life forward in so many ways. Got a lot of respect from lots of the lecturers when they realised, I had more focus and responsibility compared to lots of the other students and felt taken seriously because of it. I was given loafs of support by my uni too. Good luck!

*loads of support.

Although 'loafs of support' sounds like an interesting metaphor??!! 😁

NinahH · 25/11/2017 00:33

I'd love loaves of support.

I want to do the UEA one but moving is not an option. Do they do any kind of distance learning does anyone know?

And yes op - you should go for it!
