How to be visible on Amazon KDP

I've just found this forum and I'm hoping someone out there will have experience of this. I had a look at some of the threads and there are people who have used KDP and been pleased with the results.

A bit of background - sorry if it's long...

I started writing YA fiction in 1998 and self-published a series of related short stories (same characters) over four volumes between 2000 and 2003. I sold some, but had no real idea as to how to promote them. Yet those who read them seemed to like them, which helped my confidence at least! I wrote these under a pseudonym.

Then I was asked to write an educational article for a magazine aimed at sixth-form students. I ended up writing 24 of these, from then until the present day. Most of them were commissioned, and I actually got paid (!) so at least someone thinks my writing style is OK - for non-fiction at least. I used my real name when writing these.

But since I retired in 2013 I've been wanting to go back to YA fiction. I read about 70 novels by other people in order to get a feel for the genre, and then wrote my first YA romantic fiction novel last year. Three months to write, six months to edit, cut, rewrite, etc.

I thought I would try KDP and finally published it at the end of October. Unfortunately, it's currently languishing below position 2000 in its category. And I don't know what to do about it.

It seems to be a chicken and egg situation. In order to read it (and possibly review it) people first need to find it. They are unlikely to stumble upon it unless it's in the top 100, yet to get there it needs sales and good reviews.

Some people have read it - but these are people who I've mentioned it's existence to. And it seems to appeal to a wide age range (14 to 64, that I'm aware of). I've had some good feedback too, but how on earth to make it more widely known?

Any advice would be most gratefully received.

OP, why don't you just send it off? Lots of agents are looking for YA books now and are trying to add to their lists. Give me a shout if you want me to tell you who is actively looking.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 01/05/2016 20:58

Go on! Yes there will most likely be rejections but you never know, and you might end up with some nice comments that make you feel quite OK about it. You might find you cope better with rejections than you think.

MissBattleaxe · 02/05/2016 10:34

Agree with Imperial and Countess. You've got nothing to lose by submitting it to an agent. These days it's mainly email submissions so it won't even cost you a stamp. You may well get rejections, but all the best writers have been there and had that too. Don't be afraid of an editor "changing" your book. Sometimes they can see things you can't and make it even better than you thought.

Also, if you decide to stay put as a Kindle Book, definitely change the cover and condense the blurb. Good luck!

Helmetbymidnight · 02/05/2016 10:45

Agree with others.

Why not give yourself three months of applying to agents, etc, and then if that doesn't work, post it back up and go in heavy on marketing/promotion?

I like the title and it probably is a fun premise. If you stay on KDP, I agree with changing the cover and beg everyone you know for a review.

Bit late getting back I know - have spent the whole day travelling. 3 buses, 9 hours.

Give me a shout if you want me to tell you who is actively looking.

Yes please - I think I'll give it a go.

beg everyone you know for a review.

I've been trying to do this since October! I obviously don't have enough friendsSad What I find really frustrating is that, although there are a lot of good YA books on Kindle, there are also some really poor ones - yet the poor ones have good reviews! How does that work?

Update - I sold two books over the last two days. If that's because of anyone on here, thanks, but the interesting thing is that the book has moved up about 1700 places! Still not in the top 100, but much closer.

Some of the poor ones have paid for reviews, sad to say. When I published my book I was shocked to get spam on Twitter from people offering five star reviews for money Angry

ImperialBlether · 03/05/2016 12:21

OK, here goes:

Hellie Ogden is actively looking for young adult debuts - Janklow and Nesbit.

Anyone from Diamond Khan and Woods but I'd submit to Elinor Cooper as she won't get as many submissions as the other two.

Either Caroline Sheldon or Felicity Trew at Caroline Sheldon - however Caroline has said she rarely takes anyone on, so I'd submit to Felicity Trew.

Anna Power at Johnson and Alcock - set aside a bit of time if you submit here - it has a very thorough submission process.

Eve White - there's a lot of information on her site that you should read before submitting.

Thank you!

Amazon search engines are designed to find books listed under popular categories and niches so keywords are going to be your best friend. If you choose their kdp select program, they'll supposedly do some basic promoting for you, but unless you already have a following, take a look at how many other fiction or thrillers are available to someone looking for a book in that genre.I just typed in "Amazon Contact Number" and came up with 313,782 titles from which to choose! So you might get someone to stumble upon yours (and you'll need a killer cover to attract attention), but don't quit your day job the minute you hit the "publish" button! Thanks for asking me about self-publishing. This is a wonderful opportunity to share your message with the world.

I thought I'd do an update since it's now over a year since I put my books on KDP and they really aren't doing well. Sad
I confess I still haven't tried agents. I'm not looking for an income and I really don't want the hassle, but I have tried some of the ideas suggested here.
I added more tags. It made no difference, but I think I now know why. I read somewhere else that Amazon will not recommend a book until it has at least ten reviews. So far I only have one (although it is a nice one and if it's from anyone on here, thank you).
But it's back to the chicken and egg situation where I can't get reviews unless people read the books and they can't read them unless they can find them, and they can't find them unless they have reviews...
Actually, someone on another thread said words to the effect that they wouldn't buy a book from an unknown author unless it had about 50 reviews. But where are these reviews to come from?
Another suggestion was to make a book free on KDP select for 5 days. I tried that last year and got about 50 downloads - but no reviews. Apparently other people get thousands of downloads when they do this, so what am I doing wrong? Is it the cover? This was suggested by several people and I've had a go at doing some alternatives. (Click on the image for a bigger version.) I would be very grateful for your opinions, helpful people, and if I can decide on a better cover I'll do a free thing on KDP this Christmas - watch this space!

OP, if you're serious about writing, send it off to four or five agents who represent YA authors. If they do reject you, listen to what they say.

I self-published a couple and it took 18 months to get 75 reviews. In five weeks of traditional publishing, I'm nearly double that. It's not just that - a good publisher will get you to write magazine articles etc - you might not be paid for them, but there'll be a link to your book.

Think about what you want - if you want to be taken seriously, send it off, listen to replies, do what they say and send it back again!
