A need honest advice on a book i have written

I have started writing a novel and I wanted to get some advice on where to go from here. I would really like some honest advice on whether its any good. I'm new to mumsnet and just finding my way around it so be patient with me please if i get things wrong

What sort of information are you looking for? Are you ready to submit to an agent, or are you after some editorial advice?

I just wanted to know if there are people out there who would be prepared to read it and give me unbiased honest opinion on whether its good enough to send to a publisher.

Have you finished the novel already? Or have you just written the first chapter or so?

My advice would be (if you haven't already) to finish writing it, then put it in a drawer for a month, and then take it out and re-read it. You may well find a lot of improvements that you want to make yourself at that point.

You could also look at going to a creative writing class at a local FE college or similar. That would be a great way to improve your skills and gather feedback on your writing style.

Agree with Grendel that a creative writing class is a great way to polish your writing and meet like-minded people.

You can also pay for editorial services before submitting anywhere - there are lots and lots and lots of freelance editors available. However, do think carefully and choose even more carefully, as you're putting a lot of trust in them to improve your work.

Have you been reading any creative writing books? There are some really good ones about which will help a lot.

Next, I'd say finish the book. So many people have written a few chapters but can't actually finish the book.

Once you've finished it, give it to a friend to read. Say that you want constructive and helpful comments. Choose carefully who you ask; it's awful if someone is scathing about your work!

you need the right kind of friend - ime the more distant the more helpful

Try joining a writing workshop, there are some online ones and it's a great way to get objective feedback on your writing.

Yes there are lots of books that can help you improve your writing, Stephen King's 'On Writing' is great IMO - it cured me of excessive adverb usage anyway!
