Any advice for a new writer?

Hello all

Would anyone like to give me a little advice please?

In a nutshell, I've always (like so many) fancied myself as a children's writer. I have lots of knowledge of children's books (from being a primary teacher and also as a mum). I'm a avid reader and enjoy 'English' (studied Eng Lit at A-Level and wish I'd done that at uni insted of Modern Langs!).

Anyway, I have an idea for a picture book, aimed at, I'd say, 4-6 year olds but I'm struggling to get the tone right. Can't even seem to decide which tense to write in and am basically faffing about a lot!

What's your advice for just getting on with it (apart from just getting on with it of course!).

TIA

borrow some 4-6 year olds, tell it orally, see how they react? ask them for suggestions
really good technique for character development is hot seating, as you will no doubt know being a teacher - this age group respond really well

Generally, picture books are for the under 5's. I found it helpful to sit in the library and read. Smile

Try it and try and try and you will know when it's right :)
