Israel/Ireland football match

I know there are Irish posters here. Whatever about the rights and wrongs of the FAI decision here. I’m a bit taken aback that the home match will take place in Ireland. Surely a neutral country would be better.

I fear we’ll have a crowd of troublemakers down from the North. And if unrest kicks off, as we have experienced, there are too many here who will be happy to participate in a bit of destruction in the city.

"troublemakers down from the North"

I'm fed up to the back teeth of this way of describing and viewing people from Northern Ireland. All my life I've had people from south of the border behaving towards Northerners like me as if we are some inherently violent and unintelligent subclass of Irish people. It's completely ignorant, belittling and insulting.

Yeah it is a Republic thing, they seem to think they're better for some reason.

Anyway the Palestine/Israel stuff you see in ROI is all just posturing

And yet another goady post.

I do not think we are better. There are loads only too happy to cause trouble here. But there is a possibility that if more organised groups get involved that it will get very bad.

i’m predicting who that could be. And jumped to conclusions, which was wrong on me. I don’t know yet and shouldn’t have pointed a finger at the north.

It took less than 30 members of that Combat 18 group from England to cause a proper riot at that football game in 1995. Different times now of course. But it goes to show how just a small about of organised violence can really kick off the rest of the crowd.

I’m hoping that most Irish people don’t view everything through the lens of the Northern Ireland troubles and their relationship with Britain.
The situation in the Middle East is very very different.

Dagda · 07/03/2026 13:05

@OpheliaWasntMad have you been to the north recently?

Support for Israel vs Palestine has been a divisive factor there along sectarian lines. And there are loyalist links with far right groups here in the republic who are also keen to spark violence.

Odd comment.

What are the repercussions if the players refuse to play? Which I think they should do.
