Sad to hear this news. I'm not an Irish speaker myself, but he was so passionate about the language. And I watched some of his travel programmes too.

Such a loss. He was a treasure of a man. Very very sad to read this news this morning.

Havetogooutagain · 03/10/2025 08:24

Very sad indeed to hear this news.

padronpepper · 03/10/2025 08:25

That’s such sad news. I love his books.

Havetogooutagain · 03/10/2025 08:43

I agree with this from Conor Goodman in the Irish Times.
”We often use the term ‘force of nature’ to denote a very assertive person, but Manchán was a force of nature in a better sense: gentle, yet powerful, inspiring and humbling. Ní bheidh a leithéid ann arís.”

He will be missed.

What a loss. His books helped me understand dúchas so much more. RIP

Sad news, he'd recently spoken about his illness and was due at my local theatre next month.

I'm rubbish at Irish but he had a very engaging way that drew you in.

TaTuirseOrm · 03/10/2025 12:08

So sad to hear this, he was so engaging & inspiring. RIP Manchán.

Lovely quote there, especially with the cúpla focal 🇮🇪 @Havetogooutagain

flatsevenup · 03/10/2025 13:17

A gentle soul gone too soon. RIP Manchán.

Abhannmor · 03/10/2025 19:29

RIP Manchán , way too young .

I was so sorry to hear of his passing I only discovered him a year or so ago but loved his rte shows and listening to his grá and deep understanding of the Irish language I loved learning about all the beautiful sayings as gaeilge. I heard his interview a couple of weeks ago and was so sad to hear of his bleak diagnosis and how matter of fact and unphased he seemed by it, so unfair how short his time was in the end. He was worried about his partner because they'd be left alone I hope they get strength from the outpouring of love and respect people have for him.

Absolutely. So sad.

He was too young to go.
May he rest in peace and deepest sympathy to his loved ones.

What sad news. He had a huge influence, evangelical without being preachy. I hope he had a very peaceful death.

MarieDeGournay · 04/10/2025 09:49

We have lost a treasure. A man who brought back ancient stories and rites and made us realise that they are not so ancient, they are still around us in our placenames and the wells we still take water from and the trees we still leave ribbons on - in spite of Christianity and colonisation.

He showed us a way back 'to the rivers, the stones, the wells, and the goddess-rooted wisdom of the Irish landscape' .

He is going back to the land he came out of, and loved, and illuminated for us.
Suaimhneas síoraí dá anam.

Havetogooutagain · 04/10/2025 10:23

I agree @MarieDeGournay.
I loved his documentary series about wells on TG4, Ag Triall ar an Tobar.

powershowerforanhour · 04/10/2025 15:40

I was sad to see this, I didn't even know he was ill . He was one of a kind.

MarieDeGournay · 08/10/2025 14:39

I was interested to learn that his family lived in Eglinton Rd, Donnybrook in Dublin 4 - though he spent a lot of time with family in the Kerry Gaeltacht, hence his bilingualism.

'Donnybrook' is from Domhnach Broc, the church of St Broc. There is a holy well in Donnybrook, St Broc's Well - I don't know if it is still accessible.
I do however know where it is located: in a back garden of a house in...
Eglinton Road.

Cursum perficio - I finish my journey.
