Any tips? It’s a work driven move and they get housing. Any good hints?

What kind of hints? Where is she moving from?

From NI. I don’t know really, general vibe, hidden gem places to visit etc. she has a young baby. I know the republic is more expensive generally. How do you find the health system?

Health system is tricky. Difficult to get a GP at the moment. Private health insurance is expensive and it is a must imho. Kildare is nice, loads to do and near Dublin. Where in Kildare?

nhsmanagersanonymous · 26/05/2025 15:08

Near Naas. Not sure private insurance is an option anyway as she has two pre-existing conditions. She doesn’t use the gp often but will need to find one eventually.

Tbh healthcare in NI is also diabolical atm!

Kildare native, near Naas, here- all the hassle and expense of an urban area with the inconvenience and lack of amenities of the countryside!
It’s not that bad but she’ll probably need to be able to drive as public transport locally is terrible, some lovely spots for walks and nice places to eat, first point of call would be her nearest library to see what’s happening for families- baby book clubs, carer and toddler groups, baby swim etc.
There’s huge pressure on local GP services, childcare/ school places throughout the locality so she will need to research and get names on lists asap.
The county has struggled to keep a distinct identity after decades of huge development and its proximity to Dublin but lots more local celebrations and heritage events have emerged recently which has had a positive impact.
Good luck to her - Up the Lilies!

Thanks! She’s not working at the moment, partner is, baby is years away from school so hopefully time to work that out and that’s very helpful re library! Yes she drives

If it’s a work related move, maybe her dh could swing health insurance through his company? Depending on what they are and what their outgoings are they could apply for a GP visit card. More people are entitled than you’d think. It’s not just based on income it’s based on income versus outgoings.

Really difficult to get registered with a GP at the moment even with private healthcare so it's more likely that she'll have to a) go to a walk in private clinic which will be £.
I would definitely try to get healthcare as part of the job offer and check that it will cover a walk in clinic too.

In the short term, I'd re register her at your home so if she gets stuck she can come back to NI and get seen by her old GP. That wouldn't last very long though if she has regular check ups and medications not being filled by the NHS.
