Random idle musing about the Irish national anthem

(Not a political thread)

DH is watching the rugby so I heard Ireland's Call in the background, which got me thinking that if Ireland ever united in the future then we would probably need a new national anthem. My preference would be not to have another battle related one.

So, ignoring for the moment that I don't think I've sung the national anthem since I left school so it's largely irrelevant to me, I've been thinking about what sort of anthem we could have. I would quite like Hozier to compose it, mostly because I like his stuff so far. I think it should be a six part harmony, two parts for male, two for female and two for children and be simple but rousing. Each of the two part categories should work together without one of or both the other categories, so a completely male version would sound good but different to, say, a female and child version. I would like it to be about several types of weather in the same day, wild mountains, waves crashing on the shore, people banding together and lots of green (although now that I've typed that it sounds a bit Disney version of Ireland). It should be able to be sung unaccompanied but also sound good with traditional instruments.

(I should be sorting out the chaos in the kitchen, but I don't want to which is why I'm having a flight of fancy instead. Grin)

Must look into Amhrán Dochais it sounds good. Agree with some posters that Irelands Call is a bit cringe. That's what can happen when you try to invent something in a hurry I guess. There are some lovely old airs out there. I'm not averse to new choons but I would ditch the Gaeilge. Because....why bother if so? Might as well have God Save the King.

Aaargh wouldn't of course!

God that Amhrán Dóchais is a bit of a dirge .
There’s no way a crowd singing it could keep in tune - I played Liam Clancy singing it on You Tube and even he sounded out of tune. Smile

“Ireland, this land is our land
…….
This land was made for you and me!”

Off to look for the full lyrics.

American folksong made famous by Woodie Guthrie, made popular during the 80s as it rhymes Kerry with Derry.
The version I heard was in the background of a Waterboys song
“from the Gougane barra to the Liffey waters, this land was made for you and me!”This land

I'm sorry but it has to be My Lovely Horse for me

You win! I'd sing along to that if it was our anthem. 😁

Leave the saxophone solo out though, right?

Amhrán na bhFiann is less violent than the Marseillaise I think. I don't think I'd change it (and I grew up in NI)

Editing to say I'd change my mind if My Lovely Horse was an option

The Liam Clancy version of Amhrán Dóchais is awful! And his pronunciation is weird.
If found this version - it seems to be the Aer Lingus 'works choir', it's from the 1970s, the sound is bad, but I like it, it's cheerfulSmile

There's one more version online, and though it's the usually wonderful Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh, there are also two other singers and the performance is also a bit dirge-like.

😂Was just about to say we should have something from Neil Hannon

@MarieDeGournay
I remember singing that in school. (Liam Clancy murdered it.)

I think Danny Boy/ Derry Air (or Londonderry Air if preferred) is one everyone could get behind, with different words.

Also Roisin Dubh.

He did, didn't he?!

Danny Boy is a perennial favourite all right, mathanxiety ... a bit wasted if it was the national anthem though, then it couldn't just be sung as the beautiful song it isSmile
Ditto Róisín Dubh, and I think people might find it a bit hard to sing?

I read somewhere that the earliest Irish Olympic teams used 'Let Erin Remember' - quite a stirring tune, there'd have to be new words of course.

I absolutely love 'A Nation Once Again', it's really stirring and uplifting I think.
I also like the words, comparing Ireland to Greece and Rome and all that, but obvs there'll have to be new words.

It's hard to argue against My Lovely HorseGrin
