Favourite city in Ireland

Reading another thread about Dublin and it got me thinking about the cities in Ireland and how I would rank them. So, taking everything into consideration, how would you rank the cities in Ireland, with 1 being your favourite and 6 being your least favourite: Cork, Dublin, Galway, Kilkenny, Limerick, Waterford?

Galway, Dublin, Cork, Kilkenny, Waterford, Limerick (if I have to have it on the list at all 😁)

KerryBlues · 22/02/2025 21:16

Actually, Dublin and Galway tie.

GoldenNuggets08 · 22/02/2025 21:17

Yes you do have to use them all - I should've put that in my OP 🙈

I think I'd rank them Galway, Cork, Kilkenny, Limerick, Waterford, Dublin

Unfortunately I don’t know all the cities well enough to vote…which has given me pause for thought given that I’m Irish and getting on a bit.
I like some areas of Dublin, but find O’Connell St and surrounds scary. I’m embarrassed about the state of things here really.

Which two have you lived in? I've never lived in any of them!

Cork and Waterford ☺️

I may be biased but Belfast! Not without its own issues and there are parts of the city that I wouldn’t happily venture to (like most places to be honest) but I adore where we live. Great schools, increasingly cosmopolitan, affordable, can be in the city centre/at the beach/up a mountain/in the forest all within a 20 minute drive of our home.

alteredimage · 22/02/2025 22:33

I was also coming on to add Belfast to the list.

GoldenNuggets08 · 22/02/2025 22:51

I forgot about Belfast, sorry. Amazing city! I knew I'd forget some. I also had to look up Sligo. I defo hear some people trying to claim it's a city but Google has informed me that'll never happen, it's a town!

And Derry ^

And Derry?
A great place to visit for a weekend.

Was just going to say that! LOVE Derry!!!!!

Agh I don't know where to place Derry and Belfast. My visit to Belfast was very rushed and I know we didn't get the best out of it. I loved Derry!!!

Waterford, Galway, Cork, Limerick, Kilkenny and reluctantly as it has to be included in the list Dublin is last.

goodthinking99 · 23/02/2025 09:46

Cork, Belfast, Dublin, Kilkenny, Waterford, Derry, Galway, Limerick for me. I feel bad for Limerick seeing as how I've only been there once.

I am from Dublin, living abroad. I recently came back from a short family break near to Dublin, visited Dublin city during the day ( hadn't been for a few years). I can honestly say I would never recommend going there to anyone. We had a wander around, cut through Temple Bar. Full of hens and stags. Something very disturbing happened .......there was a man (in his 30s) in a corner of the street with his back to us who appeared to be masterbating by his movements. His drunken gang of friends started leering and jeering at him. We then made a quick exit. We had 3 teenage daughters with us . They saw what was happening , the youngest thought he was weeing, the eldest suspected what I did. My husband was convinced he was "shaking himself after weeing" but he did not see him, only briefly saw him in corner. I was absolutely horrified. Ruined the day for me. Wandered up Grafton Street and into a couple of pubs, both of which were really run down , ripped seats, dirty etc. Came out again. At Dublin airport on the way home , the place was packed with groups of drunken hens and stags, and older couples too, all returning back to the UK after a weekend of debortiary. All still drinking in the bars. It was so depressing, and very sad for me to see beautiful Dublin now in an awful state. Michael O' Leary has a lot to answer for ...hasn't been the same since cheap flights have encouraged these horrible groups of people into our city, weeing , shouting, vomiting, swearing etc. Won't be rushing back in a hurry and will not be recommending to anyone. Not sure about many other cities in Ireland any more but surely they can't be as bad.

SleepPrettyDarling · 24/02/2025 00:17

I walked down Grafton St last night with a visiting friend and he was shocked to see a long line for a soup kitchen on the corner. This was about sn hour after the shops closed, about 7pm. Same on O’Connell St, North Earl St, etc. It’s not unique to Dublin, sadly, so many cities are riven with homelessness and antisocial behaviour. The city managers are completely out of their depth. It’s so dispiriting to see the grime, overflowing bins, rowdy behaviour, and general boorishness. Sad.

turkeyboots · 25/02/2025 19:29

Galway, Kilkenny, Waterford, Cork, Sligo (is Sligo a city?). Dublin is fine. I don't love it though.
And I like Belfastmore than Dublin, but it doesn't feel like an Irish city. I always get trapped in Derrys one way system so it might be lovely but it stressed me out!
