Communion and confirmation the same day

My two daughters are 4 years apart - one is 7 one is 11. They are currently in first and fifth class in school which means next year my older girl will be making her confo and younger girl will be making her communion. Their school usually does the masses on the same date, one after the other. Has anyone else had this happen at their kids schools?

I have never heard of this. That’s pretty bonkers. Usually there aren’t enough seats in a church to accommodate one, let alone 2!

The school? Faith one?
I would do it at parish church. Let the children go together. It's quite commln around here.

No, I've never heard of it happening. Usually the confirmations are in February or March and then the communions are in May. Still, you'll save a fortune by having one party instead of two separate ones.

Is it like the GAA and they’ve changed the calendars around? Priest shortages?

Its going to hurt the bouncy castle industry…😀

That's very unusual!
Like a PP said the church is usually chock-a-block for both ceremonies, well it is here because 3 schools make their communion / confirmation together.
Usually confirmations are in March/ April (before Easter anyway) and performed by the Bishop (although I think past few years it hasn't been the Bishop, maybe a monsignor 🤔).
Communions at always in May here.

I can't figure out if I'd prefer it them both on one day or not? You would save on buying more clothes, and on having two "parties".

The vast majority of schools in Ireland are R.C! So I suppose technically a faith school.

Should have said the ceremonies will already be held in the local parish church connected to the school!

Yep, it's been like that in my kid's school for a while. Communion mass is at ten o'clock and confirmation is at twelve so we'll probably have a half hour or so to take pictures outside between the two masses

Wow I've never heard of them on same day before. Imagine it's an extremely long and tedious day for the children (and younger siblings) who are generally so excited , sitting for a second ceremony sounds like a bit of a nightmare. Curious whereabouts you live?

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 18/02/2025 05:07

I'm in England but that's an odd way to approach it. Do they just wheel a bishop in for the day?

Here confirmations are in feb and FC in May.

Travellingwithacarpetbag · 18/02/2025 05:42

I’ve never heard of a school having them on the same day either. Surely sometimes it will impact on siblings, as in your case, or on other relatives like grandparents too in the case of cousins. It seems a bit mad!

I was at a confirmation in June a couple of years ago, and have also attended one in February. The scheduling can vary depending on the diocese I think. Where I am they do tend to finish up in April, but it’s not the same all over the country.

Travellingwithacarpetbag · 18/02/2025 05:48

If it’s not until next year can you query it with the school and explain the issue? The dates won’t have been set yet and they should have some influence over the FC one at least. I really don’t think their current type of arrangement is a good one.

In our school, the parents would complain and it would be changed! That's not on if anyone has both. Not fair.
