My cousin had a really nasty cough the other day and I recommended her get Codinex after she tried Benylin and Robitussin. Apparently, she was denied in several pharmacies before going to one that sold it to her. I've bought it in the past without any trouble so I'm surprised why they were reluctant. I know it contains codeine but so do Nurofen Plus and Solpadeine which pharmacists hand out easily.

I usually have to answer a few questions if I buy Nurofen Plus or Solpadeine, even in my own pharmacist where they know me very well. I was even refused once years and years ago as I was buying them for DM (waiting for a hip op) and they said she would have to come in herself. We were travelling through a small town on our way somewhere. I think that was when the stricter rules came out first.

Wow you can still get codeine in cough medicine in Ireland? Lucky you lot! They stopped it in England years ago, cough medicines here are a waste of time now really.

Googling suggests it is soon to become prescription only due to misuse.

Codinex Codeine Phosphate 15 mg/5 ml Oral Solution 150 ml pack is to be reclassified from a non-prescription to a Prescription Only Medicine (POM) due to concerns relating to the risk of misuse and abuse. This reclassification will be implemented on 3 December 2024.

None of them work, they r the products that make the drug companies rich.

Put Vicks vapour rub on the soles of your feet in bed, use trainer socks on top! It usually works very well, and no one really knows why.

If it doesn't work and the cough gets worse, then it's GP time.

The ones that have codeine in do actually work because Codeine suppresses the cough reflex. However as I said we haven't been able to get those for years now in UK.

I've worked in pharmacy for a lot longer than I care to admit but yes codinex wouldn't be sold like every other cough bottle it's much easier to abused as it's straight up codeine where solpadeine has paracetamol as well and more dangerous in that if you took too much paracetamol it would lead to liver failure. Codinex would usually only sell it if we knew the customer or was recommended by a doctor.
A Vogel Bronchosan is amazing for a dry cough fyi

There was a shock-horror exposé a while ago about pharmacies NOT controlling the sale of medication that contain codeine, they were highly criticised for it, so I suppose they now have to be ultra careful.

I get The Talk from the chemists where I've been a customer for years and years, before they give me over-the-counter migraine tablets, but I know why they are doing it, ie. to protect other people, so I grin and bear itSmile

ps BackinBlack24 - Vogel Bronchosan may be good for a dry cough but I can never forgive them for attacking the Starship Enterprise in Episode 99 of Star Trek😂
