Did anyone see Simon Harris's treatment of the carer who approached him in Co. Cork today? Despicable, condescending behaviour.

I'll try link. It's on RTEs Facebook page & the comments match his behaviour. The poor woman was visibly upset.

You'd better hurry to change your name again so you can get back on another thread

😂☕ Is that the best you can come back with.
I get you.. No debate as usual, just trying to silence people & quash debate!

Yes. To be fair to Simon, he’s grown up with a brother with autism, a mother who’s a carer/SNA and now his wife works as a nurse in paediatric palliative care. I genuinely think that experience will have given him a more in-depth appreciation of disability and the work of a carer than most politicians. He handed the situation in the supermarket in Kanturk badly but I do believe him when he says he’s very supportive of disabled people and carers (and I’m a family carer myself).
Much more needs to be done however.

Completely agree with you here @Anothermathstest . A lot more needs to be done. But I do think he cares and I do think he will try. It's interesting that Fine Gael have the most extensive policy on disabilities in their manifesto of all the parties. Disability was a huge issue for me when deciding who to vote for and I was surprised to see this. Also surprised that some parties have no mention of it at all but are among the first to criticise Harris.

Adam Harris is very successful & is the founder of the charity ASIAM. I'm sure Adam is a very good & valuable support to Simon. Adam is a also a very good role model to the autistic community that success is possible with the right supports. His charity do a lot of good work & is probably the most well known in Ireland.

I think all parties spoke out against Harris's treatment of Charlotte Fallon!

I think you need to look in the mirror @Imperiallanger or should I call you @trumped or maybe @taeandcraic

It says it all that you need to change your name on every thread you join. You are trying to make out that Aontu has lots of support when really it's just you on every thread looking for a fight with anyone who has a bit of common sense.

Yes, but this is true for some people only @Imperiallanger, though obviously it depends on how you define success. It comes in many forms.

It does indeed come in many forms. Let's hope the next government give all children the supports they need to become successful in whatever form that takes be it in the arts, sport, academics, music or just living their little lives to the fullest.

She was upset - and I'm also sure it could be pretty overwhelming to voice your feelings on an emotional subject such as disability to the leader of the country.

He on the other hand is PR and media trained. He should know how to handle tricky and confrontational conversations on emotive subjects without looking so impatient and dismissive.

I felt the mask slipped.

He was rude and arrogant. There are so many people who have been let down by politicians like Simon Harris. The children who are desperately waiting for their scoliosis operations yet that has been ignored. Simon Harris himself made a promise years ago to sort it out and he and his health minister have allowed 19 million euro allocated for that to disappear. There is no accountability. So few properties available for rent and so many families desperate for accommodation.
No doubt some people have done very well under FF & FG. . I think some largely don't care anymore as long as they themselves are alright. They don't have to worry about the price of utilities which is amongst the highest in Europe. The price of petrol and diesel the same.
Thousands lying on hospital trollies every week both under his tenure as Minister for Health & Taouseach. As for the money spent on the Children's Hospital.....

And this.

It transpired now that Fine Gael tried do control the narrative before RTE aired the clip. I think this attempt to undermine the poor care worker is disgraceful. We pay out TV licences for real news, who do FG think they by are trying to tell our state broadcaster what to air & how to do so.

I don’t think it’s right, but they all do it and across multiple media sources. I think most people have realised that by now tbh.

From the article quoted above

One RTÉ source said that they had received regular contact from all political parties about editorial issues on a daily basis throughout the campaign.

Imperiallanger · 26/11/2024 09:46

@Anothermathstest absolutely I agree all do to some extent. It's just another example of the blatent censorship & propoganda the electorate are subjected to.

I'm very happy that RTÉ decided to roll the footage with no damage control narrative from Fine Gael.

OP posts:
Anothermathstest · 26/11/2024 09:49

Yes, that’s what they should do.

Yes, that’s what they should do.

It doesn't happen at all the time so I'm very happy that RTÉ did go ahead with the footage & the mainstream media also completely rolled with it. It's the first time in a long time we have seen unbiased news coverage & I hope it continues

I said it already and I’ll say it again. That woman was rude to him from the off. He walked away when she told him he wasn’t a good man. She opened saying that he didn’t do a thing for them and they were forgotten. None of that is true.
if someone came at me aggressively I would walk a way too.

Despite what OP says, we do not own our politicians. He has the right to walk away when being disrespected. There’s no mask slipping

Ive discussed the situation with so many different people from different backgrounds… the upshot from the majority was as I say…. She was rude and aggressive.
That’s not ok.

I don't agree at all. We do not need to bow & scrape to politicians, our job as taxpayers is to hold politicans to account.
A very clear message to all politicians who work for the public is "be careful how you treat people on the way up as you never know who you'll meet on the way down".
Look at the reaction of the mainstream media who are still covering the incident.
Also Simon has not stopped apologising & explaining himself, holding himself completely accountable. If the woman was in the wrong here the is no way Simon would need to apologise.

OP posts:
Brownwitch · 26/11/2024 12:02

Same here @Readytoevolve . Anybody I have talked to about it thinks the same.
Opposition parties are ready to jump at everything though and the media love the drama!

Imperiallanger · 26/11/2024 12:15

Whatever your opinions it has effectively ended Fine Gaels campaign.

Simon was in Kanturk to drum up support for the local TD John Paul O Shea. That local TD should have stayed behind with the visibly upset woman & spoke to her. Instead he turned his back on a member of his own constituency & followed Simon Harris with the rest of the entourage. Not one Fine Gaeler asked if she was OK
Instead it now transpires FG. contacted RTE in regards to changing the narrative. This is not acceptable. The woman was very gracious in accepting Simon's apology, many wouldn't.

I agree too. It's not OK to say someone is not a good person. Very few people are 'on' in their job for 24 hours a day for the salary TDs are on. No doubt he could have handled it better but I would immediately lose respect for someone who has let this affect their vote, it's a social exchange on camera that's trending on tik tok or whatever, it means nothing. Politicians should listen to people yes, but tolerate aggression and public ridicule, no. It would be worse if he was all smiles and kisses on camera and not giving a shit about anyone once the camera is off. It actually scares me about how stupid the average voter is if PR stunts are what secures their votes.

Imperiallanger · 26/11/2024 13:01

@Dontlletmedownbruce I think the public don't like seeing people spoken to in such a dismissive manner by the leader of our state. His job at that moment in time was to support the local TD & meet the public. If it wasn't a massive deal RTE wouldn't have published it. The local TD in Kanturk or at least one of the Fine Gael entourage should have stayed behind & spoke with Charlotte Fallon instead of running after Harris. It would have softened the optics at the very least instead of leaving the poor woman alone, visibly shocked & very upset.
I wasn't voting FG anyways so this didn't sway my vote

Yes he returned to talk to her, good on him. But when he did return to listen to her she just continued to insult him personally.
