Significant celebrations for our parents next year and we want to go away for a weekend together. So my husband and I and our two girls, my sister, husband and their two girls and our parents. 10 people in total. Friday to Sunday in the Republic of Ireland.
we were thinking a hotel with self catering cottages so we could have dinner etc in hotel, maybe use spa. My sis has done FOTA resort and we were thinking along those lines.
any advice appreciated

Mount Juliet, bear Kilkenny?

Golf course hotel but with houses you can rent out. Access to spa and pool, golf club house and hotel for food.

From what I've heard, it is similar to the set up in Fota.

BabstheBounder · 18/11/2024 17:52

NEAR Kilkenny, not bear. No bears there, promise.

BabstheBounder · 18/11/2024 17:56

Mayhe Kelly's hotel, Rosslare? I went there once for a big family birthday weekend. It's strange though, full board rather than self catering, so you get fed. All. The. Time. They ring a bell for afternoon tea and I'm sure elevenses as well as breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Swimming pool was nice. Lots and lots of old people and families with small children. There must have been a spa? It is a hotel aimed at families so may not be what you are thinking of.

Thanks so much for these, I’ll start looking them up. Also glad to hear lack of bears & Kilkenny/ Killarney a sore point as I am the family joke due to my shite geography….
In fact me researching this will have us on on the Shetlands……

The Falls hotel in Co.Clare has self catering cottages.
Close enough to Lahinch, Cliffs of Mother and The Burren.

hopeishere · 19/11/2024 07:32

House is here: www.sawdays.co.uk/ireland/connacht/co-mayo/lime-kiln-house/?guests%5Badults%5D=6&term=Ireland

Lots of other options on that site too.

We stayed in the apartments here recently - they are very nice but were also reasonable. Nice leisure centre. Also short stroll into the town for cafes, shops etc. If you were going here, I'd suggest an apartment each for you and your sister and your parents stay in a hotel room.
We also often stay in the Castlerosse in Killarney - good location but the hotel closes for the winter months - self-catering and leisure centre stay open.
We also have had a similar family gathering in the Westlodge in Bantry and enjoyed ourselves.
All of the above date well run hotels in my experience and well suited to families but not "high-end 5-star" if you're looking for that type of vibe.

Mount Falcon in Ballina Co.Mayo - beautiful, and the food is great.

Castlemartyr in Cork if you want a change from FOTA.

Parknasilla lodges in Kerry.

Castle Leslie is also beautiful and lodges are gorgeous but there is no pool. There is a spa.

Goldenandsilverlight · 19/11/2024 10:48

Adare Manor has had numerous awards, including best resort in Europe I believe. They do self-catering lodges but I’m guessing fairly pricey? Worth a look.

I’m not sure when you’ll be travelling OP. I’ve found that many lodges/self-catering cottages are only available to book for 7 day periods at the height of the season. It’s easier to book weekends off season.

Kilkea castle , The Cliff at Lyons ?

BabstheBounder · 19/11/2024 15:27

Inchydoney spa hotel also has self catering apartments. I went to a wedding there about 20 years ago and felt cocooned in a bubble of soft furnishings and relaxation. Plus good food. It may have changed!

MegCleary · 19/11/2024 19:52

Oooh thanks all

I had a fab time in Castlemartyr to mark my significant birthday during the summer and loved it.

However I went for afternoon tea about a month later and the service was very poor because there was a wedding on in the hotel.

The afternoon tea bookings were put in the library and our table and the other tables not with us were ignored for the most part and to crown it we got a small jar with a delicious baked yogurt in it and the second time I put my teaspoon in it a large chuck of glass came away and I was lucky to spot it or I could have cut my mouth.

If booking there I'd advise checking if there's a wedding on when you want to stay.

Oh sorry I’ve no idea! maybe it is., I haven’t been but I’m booked to go in the new year with friends

Readytoevolve · 23/11/2024 21:24

Fota Island, it’s really lovely down there.

I have to say absolutely not to Mount Falcon. Beautiful place but such a badly managed hotel, avoid!

deeahgwitch · 25/11/2024 17:58

I visited Inchydoney Hotel, but didn't stay there. We had a quick bite to eat and it was lovely.
I thought the beach location was magical and I jntend to go back to stay there sometime soon.

MegCleary · 27/11/2024 07:25

Well the place has been set Mom wants Killarney so recommendations for there appreciated!

The Castlerosse Resort in Killarney has self catering cottages.
I've never been there but it looks great.
It's in the National Park area.

MintLion · 27/11/2024 10:27

I've stayed in the Castlerosse self catering a few times and was just looking at booking it again - so I obviously like it!
They have golf lodges and cottages - the golf lodges facing onto the golf course have amazing views. The cottage are older style but are kept fresh with new carpets etc.
They don't have spa treatments but do have a leisure centre. The hotel/bar/dining closes for the winter months. It's a well run family hotel.
I really like it because it is comfortable and has a great location - lovely walks/cycles through the park into town.
It is really reasonable, which means you could always spend your money on spa treatments in one of the many other hotels in Killarney! Or pop out the road to the Europe for afternoon tea.

Goldenandsilverlight · 27/11/2024 11:55

The Muckross Park hotel and spa also do self catering. Haven’t tried it though. A bit out of town, as is the Castlerosse iirc, 4 or 5 km I’d say.
