A day in Dublin, what to do?

I'll be in Dublin for work soon and have a day to myself before the meetings start so looking for suggestions on how to pass away a day by myself? I like walking and eating and seeing a bit of a place.

Also, what is my best way to get to the centre from the airport?

Thanks

Dublin is a small enough city once you’re in the centre so you can walk around.

For ease, I suggest heading to Grafton Street and St. Stephen’s Green. There are a few places to go see or potter about, such as Trinity College, Temple Bar, the History Museum. The streets are nice to roam around. Plenty of bars and restaurants to choose from. It depends on your preference but a good burger, Bunsen, some variety check out Gotham, or there are a few nice steak houses or Asian restaurants to enjoy.

Public transport in Dublin isn’t great. From the airport you’ll need to get a bus into the city centre. I’m not sure however which one, hopefully someone will come along with a better plan for it.

Dublin Express runs from the airport to the city. Book a ticket in advance to be safe.
The Powerscourt Centre is lovely for a wander round and a coffee and near lovely shops. Temple Bar is worth avoiding unless you enjoy a stag do. And the Guinness Storehouse is a good day out. The hop on hop off bus is good for a day's sightseeing.

Great thanks. Is the book of kells worth a visit?

Trinity and the Book of Kells is worth a visit, again book a ticket in advance to avoid the queues. The emigration museum Epic is good too, if you'd be interested in that.

The Book of Kells is worth a visit, but there is also fantastic prehistoric and medieval stuff in the National Museum in Kildare Street about 5 minutes up the road, that has free admission and no queues. Tara Brooch, Ardagh Chalice, Broighter hoard, lots and lots of Bronze Age gold. The Chester Beatty Library (a museum not a book-lending institution) has really important Islamic material and is within the Dublin Castle complex, also worth visiting.

Using the hop on hop off bus is a very good suggestion.

Check everything's website to make sure they're open on the days you are there.

Lots of good and practical advice from previous posters.
I'm also voting for the National Museum, it's manageably small but is packed with the most amazing stuff, the Bronze Age gold is... sorry, I'm running out of words: amazing! And it has those two essentials: a café and a shop.

The National Art Gallery is nearby - it also has a café and really good shop. And a few paintings too, of courseWink
And they're both close to Trinity College/Book of Kells, Grafton St.., Merrion Square, etc. In fact everything is pretty close to everywhere in Dublin, so a bit of mapwork and booking tickets in advance should produce a grand day out.

I hope you have a lovely time!

Just back after a weekend - found walking around the city in the early evening when all lit up was much more fun, energy and atmospheric.

Get bus do not pay for a taxi unless you have to it's so expensive . Go to the Guinness store house , there's also a lovely bookshop in the city centre with loads of first editions that kind of thing it's called ulysses rare books it's just off grafton street and near trinity college. I would look at Tripadvisor for food recommendations .

I just love wandering around the city... start at Trinity, explore the grounds, take a walk up grafton St and around St stephens green (grabbing a hot chocolate from Butlers).

Kilmainham gaol is an amazing tour, but must be booked a specific period in advance. It sells out.

The Guinness tout is OK, as are the free museums.

The little museum of Dublin.
Powerscourt Centre and George's arcade.
Chester Beatty Library.
Iveagh Gardens, quieter than Stephens Green.
Take the Luas up to Collins Barracks for the Decorative Arts Museum.
