Honestly would love to see him step down next as he is just awful with is 12 advisors. Appreciate all views.

Heard from a friend that hes very popular in his constituency in spite of how awful he is on a national level. She said she wouldn't be surprised if most of the rest of them get knocked out at the next election but he keeps his seat.

Couldn't believe when they didn't take the option of switching leaders to Catherine Martin when they had a leadership contest in 2020 but shes not proven herself any great shakes during her time as a minister either.

He is most likely popular with people who can afford his rise in carbon tax and the likes but do not think he is good at his job and not very likeable either. Leo is leaving before the ship sinks.

Er.... Do you mean long-serving democratically-elected parliamentarian Eamon Ryan who once nodded off during a long speech?

You can disagree with every single one of his policies, you can dissect every single one of his speeches to point out what he's got wrong, whatever, go for it. But calling politicians names like 'dozy sleepyhead' is part of the slide into going for the person not the policies.

One he was listening to or one he was making?

Edited to say sadly not a fan, I always used to give the Greens a highish preference because the issues they represent are so important, but then the people they elected started doing all the wrong things and displaying even less contact with and understanding of the electorate than the rest of the pols.

☺

I agree DeanElderberry, I'm not a fan of the current version of the Greens either.
Politicians that I might have 'had some time for' (not saying that any of them are great) in the past are now so captured by 'be kind' and 'most persecuted minority' and 'inclusion' that it overrides any sensible policies they may have had in the past. Total eclipse of cop-on.

I know lots of people think that all politicians are worthless and don't have any sensible policies anyway, but I'm a bit of a political Pollyanna 😊

For me the most awful thing is finding myself nodding along to assorted Healy Raes.

Ah the Healy Raes!
But which Healy Rae? The one who told Varadkar to go back with the 'airy fairies' in a Dáil debate and refused to apologise?
Or the one who said electric cars were part of an anti-rural plot to prevent country people having cars because country roads have lots of puddles and 'one splash of water and they're finished'?
https://twitter.com/smytho/status/971700590278561793
(I happened to see that live on TV, otherwise I'd be blaming ChatGPT!)
The Healy Rae who is the biggest landlord in the Dáil, with a portfolio of properties and shares? And family businesses covering everything from fuel supplies to refugee accommodation?
In fact, is there a Healy Rae who isn't doing the 'I'm just like you' act despite being a millionaire?
And the cap! Call me old-fashioned, but even the oul lads with caps apparently permanently attached to their heads knew to take them off as a gesture of respect.
Does anybody else remember them taking their precious caps off at mass and carefully placing them under the one knee they knelt down on?☺

Not a fan of Eamonn or the Greens, I wish they had better ideas than whack a carbon tax on everything (that people are already struggling to afford) and stick bicycle lanes all over the place.

Edited

I know where you're coming from.
I too would give them a vote in the past but not now.
The Greens and their mates working in Dublin councils 🙄

That's why finding myself nodding along to one or all of them is so troubling. If they seem like a 'better option' what the hell are the other pols doing?

Good essay question though - Healy-Rae caps - the Charvet shirts of the 21st century? Discuss the symbolism of male costume display in Irish politics.

Potential additional paragraphs - Tony Gregory neckties (absence of same) Garret Fitzgerald's odd shoes and the existence of Mick Wallace.

As usual with the smallest party in coalition all the faults of this government will be heaped on them. Then a lot of people will carry on voting for FF/FG.

It isn't just that. A lot of people who care about biodiversity issues are looking at the dreadful stuff that is continuing to happen with - for example - the felling of mature trees and the destruction of roadside vegetation generally, all within the government's power to have changed, very easily, very cheaply, and wondering why the Greens are all about big ticket policies and not about small scale incremental change.

Eamon Ryan comes across as very much the ignorant city boy who doesn't know and doesn't care, and his party seems happy with that.

Well do I remember the aul fellas at Mass kneeling with one knee on their precious caps @MarieDeGournay 😀
And the smell.
Of half washed bodies ( no baths or showers then ) and rarely worn so rarely washed clothes. With a slick of hair oil thrown into the mix.

I think he's a well intentioned idiot tbh. Of course climate change is hugely important, but when people are struggling to feed themselves and heat their homes etc, his policies are not going to be popular. He needs some sort of basic course in 'poor people ' before he's let near being in government.
