Would you correct the crèche on missing DSs fada?

pontipinemum · 11/03/2024 15:56

There is a fada in my sons name. I have it included on any form they have ever sent me.

But they always put it in the wrong place - most recently his mothers day card.

Do you think I should correct them? I haven't and I don't think I will but am I doing him a disservice? When it gets to school and he needs to know how to spell his own name I'd mention it to the teacher

I was about to say correct it, then remember that the nursery call my DD by the wrong nickname all the time... (think Timmy instead of Tommy) and I've just let that slide. So I'd be a hypocrite!

OchonAgusOchonOh · 11/03/2024 16:00

I would. If he was called Darragh and they kept spelling it Dara you would correct them. This is no different.

That said, I have a fada and most people leave it out and I never say anything, particularly as lots of people don't know how to do a fada on a keyboard. However, they are presumably signing something on his behalf (the card) so the least they can do is spell his name properly. I assume you wouldn't make a big deal of it so a simple btw, his name is spelt with a fada on the a and I would prefer if you spelt it like that please.

FawnFrenchieMum · 11/03/2024 16:01

I would tell them and ask them to correct it. Its his name and deserves to be right.

StarlightLime · 11/03/2024 16:02

Yes.

Phial · 11/03/2024 16:03

I could cope with it being left out, but not put in the wrong place! I would correct that.

Yeah. I thought a neighbour whose name is Joe was called Silas for years*. He never actually corrected me.

*Names changed to protect the innocent but similar level of difference and normality to the names.

mathanxiety · 11/03/2024 16:09

Yes, do correct.

It's not ok for them to misspell your child's name.

NotestoSelf · 11/03/2024 16:10

Yes, absolutely. I mean, it's not there for decoration, it changes the meaning in many words. Mála vs mala, féar vs fear, ban vs bán, coiste vs cóiste etc etc.

pontipinemum · 11/03/2024 16:12

My family all put the fada in the wrong place too, or put it backwards. A lot of people spell my name wrong and I've always let it go, but maybe I should be more assertive for my son

Imkindaabigdeal · 11/03/2024 16:21

Yes, absolutely.

And now I’m wondering if, like my ds, his name is Seán, and they’re spelling it as Séan (Which I just read as Shane) because it absolutely baffles me that SO many people do this. It happens all the time.

pontipinemum · 11/03/2024 16:30

@Imkindaabigdeal It's Pádraig they are spelling it Padraíg. On the daily sheet that is send home they just put the fada from about the r all the way to over the g. It can be anywhere in any direction really though.

ColleenDonaghy · 11/03/2024 16:32

Yes correct it - Sean vs Seán vs Séan are three very different names!

Pawdreeeeeg. Blush Correct it, that would drive me mad.

iwafs · 11/03/2024 16:38

I'd teach him rather than teaching them.

Or they omit it altogether, in which case the child is called 'Old'.

Alalalalalongalalalalalonglonglilong · 11/03/2024 17:12

I would say it. I work in a crèche and I am so careful about this, same with correct pronunciation of names but to be honest some people take it seriously and some don't. As part of our training it is reinforced how important this is, but I had a colleague a few years ago that consistently spelled a name wrong switching two letters despite being told multiple times to be careful, she didn't give a shit. I have another colleague who has dyslexia and double and triple checks everything and never makes errors because she cares.

Either way say it. Things like that drive me mad. Like a PP says he needs to learn too.

Crunchingleaf · 11/03/2024 17:27

One of mine has a fada and when we picked it we knew that many people will write the name without it. The girls in his room in the crèche are either Spanish or Polish and I feel like I should let it go because they have made the effort to pronounce it properly and are wonderful with the kids.

I don't know about Polish but Spanish has accents on various letters, including an acute accent that serves the same purpose as a fada so I would definitely expect them to get it right.

Changeusernamealways · 11/03/2024 19:14

Absolutely correct them. The fada serves a purpose and excluding it changes the meaning of a word

SparkyBlue · 11/03/2024 20:04

@Imkindaabigdeal to be fair I've no idea as to the purpose of a fada or why it's used so Sean would still look like Sean to me regardless of having a fada or where the fada was (if that makes sense) and I am reckoning that a lot of people are similar. Not at all saying it's right but it's just how it is. However absolutely the OP should correct them as people should always spell a persons name correctly.

PastTheGin · 11/03/2024 20:19

This is a tricky one! I would like to say insist on the correct spelling, but then again if you are not familiar with the language and fada it is quite hard to remember how to spell names correctly.
My students come from all over the world and their names contain all manner of accents and special letters. I can say their names (although a lot of them used anglicised versions), but I often need to look up the correct spellings.

Yup. My daughters Spanish teacher who is also Spanish always gets hers right.

I would ask yes!

Crazycrazylady · 11/03/2024 20:23

I think if you're in the uk. you might be fighting a loosing battle here : If they pronounce it correctly I'd let the fada go as most won't understand it's significance unless they're Irish and even here in Ireland, I see people drop the fadas all the time.

Yes be assertive. My daughter‘s name has an acute accent and it is often completely ignored. And i find i cannot add it on official forms

I'm glad I'm not the only one who doesn't know what it's for. I would also say Sean the same if it was there or not to be honest.
Would someone like to educate me as to its purpose?
