Who the heck came up with this scheme ? An added charge to plastic and aluminium and the only way to get this back is by bringing your crap back to a shop, empty, un damaged and shove it in the machine for a refund .

So I've to pay extra to buy these items, not put them in my recycling bin and walk up to the shop with bags of cans and bottles to get my money back . Is this for real ?

If I do put them into my recycling bin, it means, I've paid either 15c or 25c extra per item at the checkout and now I'm going to pay my bin company too, to take them away .

Surely this can't be right ? It's like I'm back in the 70s bringing my bottles back to the shop, maybe I'll wheel the whole feckin wheelie bin up to the shop

@Wendysfriend So your issue isn't really with the return scheme at all, is it? It's to do with the provision of public services for disabled people, which of course is very important and should be a public priority.

You must have read my posts wrong. My issue is with the scheme and I outlined who it is affecting in a negative way, which include disabled, elderly, health issues etc unfortunately it's just the abled bodied with cars who are not affected hence me pointing out how it affects some.

Many people don't realise how dire things are for these people already and here's another one they can add to their list .

@Wendysfriend exactly. It's a complete 'f*ck you' to people with mobility issues.

Absolutely 😉

You probably have a half decent public transport service. We don't.

Then why choose to live somewhere so far from amenities if you know it's going to be a problem?

You do understand that people develop health issues and illness with age and also develop diseases ?

It's not always possible to know that there's the possibility that you will become so ill that you could end up housebound or in a wheelchair. That the shops that were once so easily accessed are not anymore. Then you need to be able to fortell that the shops that were built when you first moved in might have closed down and future shops built further away

I don't live far from amenities. Amenties are close when you can get to them. I live in a suburb. The amenities are just shit here if you can't walk. And ffs, people don't always choose the perfect place to live. They choose what's available. Within budget. And as it happens, i was perfectly able to walk prior to coming here, i wasn't to know what would happen. You have a horrible attitude tbh.

You must have missed a few steps in your own thought process then. You spent the best part of 750 words outlining the issues that many people face accessing public services and moving around the country, and have ended up concluding that the big problem is a 25c environmental tax, rather than any of the actual issues.

I'm afraid I'm just going to be selfish about this one. I buy approximately 0 (zero) canned drinks a year, and maybe 1 (one) bottles of water. I might get a little narked if my access to the supermarket is impeded by people at the machines, but I'll live with that, and otherwise won't be affected by it.

Maybe because people don't always have a choice on where they live? 🙄

pontipinemum · 04/02/2024 12:12

OK firstly I don't have any physical impediments so no I can't possibly understand what that is like to live with (I mean that genuinely, it sounds a little sarky)

Until very recently we only had 1 car in the house (live rurally on a farm) when my husband could I would get him to bring me to glass + plastic recycle bottle bank. I'd have done the same with this scheme but we can now afford a 2nd car.

I think anyone with issues needs to contact their local TD. I highly doubt this scheme was brought in order to discriminate against disable people because the gov think they are 'scum' but it does sound like full consideration has not been given to other situations.

Some of the things I have read on SM makes me think it will give just plain lazy people a kick up the bum to recycle. Not just put it in their regular bin.

I also think given time some other commercial things will 'pop' up. I can also imagine lots of charities looking for the bottles

But we are recycling, we have the green bins!

couiza · 04/02/2024 14:21

The irony ( or is it by design?).... I got a message from Greyhound to say that the Green bin charge will increase by €1 soon.

Surely it should be free as it once was. I don't get it at all. Anyway someone can say change providers, but they are all the same one way or another.

I have three supermarkets near me, Aldi, SV, and Tesco. I am trying to walk more for my old age lol, so I use a backpack with wheels for regular shopping. Best Thing Ever. Sling it on my back empty, stick it in the trolley, fill it, and wheel it home. There's my steps for the day done.

I get the heavy stuff delivered once in a while. I get a bit stressed out in the car parks in supermarkets TBH. And once I find a space, I nearly have to walk as far as I do without the car!

I don't use enough bottled products to be really affected by this, but as a pp said, I think it's designed to inhibit roadside litter.

rivierliedje · 05/02/2024 10:29

Surely we should be demanding that the supermarkets who deliver, take the returns back when they next deliver and add the discount! That would solve all the issues above.
For everyone else, you don't need extra trips to the supermarket, just bring them back next time you go to the supermarket.
In Belgium which doesn't have this generally, but does on some things, especially crates of beer bottles, it's a thing for the best man to go into the groom's house and fill it with empty crates and bottles as a wedding prank/present, so that when the groom takes it all back to the shop they get a tidy sum.

I don't work. Not by choice. I worked and paid taxes for years. Is that ok with you? Am i 'deserving' enough? What if i never worked? Should i be dumped on a slag heap? Society is supposed to encompass everyone.

Forgive me, I'm not in Ireland. So this might be a pointless question/comment. I clicked on this thread out of curiosity.

I'm in the uk and familiar with this type of scheme from relatives living in other parts of Europe.

It seems like everyone here is talking about returning the item to the same shop they bought it from.

Is that necessary? Couldn't you find a more local shop/place that participates and return items there? I'm pretty sure in Germany they accept items bought anywhere, returned anywhere. Because the shop itself isn't out of pocket.

Forgive me if I've totally missed something here.

The point is, there aren't 'more local' places. They just shoved in the policy, with essentially no preparation. I don't think anyone is anti recycling, but we do do need facilities to go with it.

PotterHead1985 · 05/02/2024 14:52

Also from what I can see the refund voucher will only be valid in the shop whose machine you used. Not great if you don't shop there.

They need to be redeemed in the shop you return them in, but you can either ask for the money or for it off your shopping. I.E. you can't return the bottles at the machine in Lidl then use the voucher in Tesco.

@Chickenkeev They are starting to pop up, I thought there wasn't one in my little village one has appeared. I was talking to the chat service in re-turn she said any shop over 250m2 will have to take them.

I also asked if there is a guide/ policy for people with limited mobility who rely on shopping delivery and can't easy get to a shop this was their response

'We are currently investigating alternative methods for return of the containers and would advise for you look at our website for any updates.

As this is a very new scheme in Ireland and we are striving to build on our service to be fully inclusive to all people.

The bottles/cans can be taken to a collection point where the staff will be able to assist with the take back of the containers. We are receiving feedback on these types of queries and we will make sure to inform consumers if these supports become available."

I said that isn't really good enough and that there needs to be a collection service for people that are unable to return to the shop themselves. I also asked that she makes sure to forward on my queries, she said she will.

It's not a tax, do you view the €1 you put into the trolly as a tax? Any unclaimed money will not go to the government, it goes to re-turn. Or similar to the trolly, it will go to the person who does return it.

@Chickenkeev hopefully they do put in some better practices of people who are unable to make returns. If we all keep asking they just might.

TheRulerofThings · 05/02/2024 16:00

@Spencer0220 you can return the bottles anywhere - it doesn’t have to be from the place you bought them. You can only use the vouchers in the shop where you returned them however.

Going against the grain here but I think it’s a good thing. There was a lot of moaning when the plastic bag tax and the smoking ban came in here and most people now accept these are infinitely better than what went before. I was doing my weekly Tesco delivery order today and this definitely made me think about how to avoid buying things in plastic bottles or cans, so as a project to reduce waste it’s doing what it’s supposed to do.
