Secondary schools in Meath/Louth

Hi
I've been overseas for years and returned with my primary school ages kids. A boy and a girl.

I am not from this part of Ireland and I don't know the lay of the land really.

Are there good private secondary schools anyone can recommend? Or state? We are also close to Drogheda and north Dublin.

Thanks

Depends on your catchment area, if you are in Drogheda you may not get north dublin and vice versa. Also depends on if you need single sex/religious/non religious ethos etc. I can happily answer questions if about Drogheda.

@Neverinamonthofsundays thanks - Drogheda would be helpful too! My understanding is we are in no catchment and every school is a lottery. I don't know which schools are good and which to try avoid? Do you know much about Drogheda Grammar? I would consider private but apart from DG I don't know of any! Many thanks

I'm
Impartial about single sex/mixed and religious as I'll go with whatever is the school providing the beys opportunity. DD is very academic and will thrive in an environment that offers a lot of opportunity. DS (is younger, so it's not so obvious yet) he is bright but may have a form of dyslexia, and is very competitive and keen on sport. I would also consider boarding school is its the right school (though I feel devastated at the thought!)

Yes all a lottery system now although I thnk private schools are allowed to run off original lists till 2025 so that may rule out the grammar. That is the only one I know of that is a fee paying school I think 4k a year and it does get mixed reviews.
There are two educate together secondary schools that are great one is Ballymakenny college and the other is drogheda educate together. Both are very popular and always always over subscribed. There is colaiste na hinse in laytown which is mixed and huge and easier to get into due to the fact they seem to have to open spaces for kids who do not get other school places.
There is St Marys boys and Sacred heart girls also but I dont know anything about either of them really. ALso sorry Greenhills girls but I know someone who lives across from the school and refused to send her girls there for some reason.
Boarding schools there really was only ever Gormonston but I am not sure they even take boarders now. My friend went there and loved it but as I dont know if it is still boarding I cant comment further.

Gormonston college is no longer a private school, its a public school opened to both genders. No boarding school in the area from my understanding.

My daughter is due to start secondary school next September and all school applicants form were opened in September, available online. my recommendation is to apply to all school in your local area, its a lottery as you previously said, my daughter got accepted in one school and wait listed for all other school, however she was happy with the school she got accepted into so we accepted. I wish you the best of luck in your search.

There’s five day boarding available in Dundalk Grammar - mixed school with a good reputation easily accessible by train from Drogheda, even as a day school.

If money isn’t an issue Clongowes Wood College is in Kildare and would suit a sporty boy and they have a very competent Additional Needs department.
