Tv license is due. Not sure whether to renew.. I know it's the law but it's also against the law to fund courruption & RTÉ have proved how courrupt they are.. What have other mumsnetters done?

Plenty of people have stopped paying it altogether. Income from the TV licence fee is now down €16.4 million since July. That's why OP is asking.

Ps citizen’s information says about whether you need a license

You don’t need a TV licence to watch television on your computer, phone or other device (for example, RTÉ Player or streaming services like Netflix).
However, the computer, phone or other device must not be capable of receiving a TV signal by cable, satellite or aerial.

So as there handing over to revenue there is no need to get one now as I'd be paying double then?

If you don't watch live TV, or have a TV plugged in then don't pay it.

They gave me a refund and I just have to update them ( license company) once a year that my circumstances have not changed. This is since 2014.

They said they would send someone round to check, I'm still waiting 😁😁

I Just have to avoid live tv and IPlayer. One of the best decisions I have made, I miss it like a brain haemorrhage, I'm just glad to get away from the adverts, the license fee, game shows, love island and sport on every channel

Have Netflix, Spotify and you tube😁

lesdeluges · 20/11/2023 10:21

how will the Revenue collect it from those who don't have to pay any tax?

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 20/11/2023 10:37

That's not the case in Ireland @Irridescantshimmmer, it is literally a licence to have a tv here. What you do or don't watch on it is irrelevant.

Do I need a TV licence?
If you have a TV, you must have a TV licence. This applies even if the TV is broken, as it is capable of being fixed. If you have other equipment capable of receiving TV signals (for example by using an aerial, satellite dish or cable), you must also have a TV licence.
You only need one TV licence for your whole house, even if you have multiple TVs in your home.
If you are living in an apartment or flat and have a TV, you need your own TV licence. A separate licence is required for each separate flat or apartment.

That's what I want to know too. But at the same time is there any point of buying a licence if they are changing the method?
Also what way will it work for people who genuinely don't have a licence? Will it be done as a blanket charge or household? Will landlords be charged & use it as an excuse to add on to rent? So many questions!

I don't pay one, I sent the bank mandate thing to pay monthly when we moved into our house over 5 years ago. They have never taken money, and have never knocked/ wrote. We live in the back arse of no where!

I think I would just pay in your case though. Not because of any morals etc just because I couldn't be bothered with the hassle if they do pursue you. I know from years ago friends got the knock on the door and just had to have it paid within a week. No €1,000 fine or court like they say

Set it up as a monthly direct debit so you never feel the pain of it and doesn't become an annual "I hate Rte" argument.
I don't even notice it anymore.

Afaik, if you're behind they don't let you set up a DD. They're not helpful at all. So i haven't paid mine, despite being willimg to do so. Just didn't have the chunk. We did ask about a dd of the few quid a week but were told no.

Haven't paid mine in 10 years. Never seen anyone doing the rounds in that time either.

If you decide not to pay, make sure you declare online and sign the form that says you don't require a license, as failure to do that is an automatic fine

Do this, don’t pay mine either.

I'm UK, no Tv licence, I haven't watched live TV for over a decade. I'm a bit shocked that Ireland has a blanket rule on this, it's really unfair.
Tv licensing is well out of date and bad value for money IMHO.

Yes I have had the inspector round, and he just said fill out the form, which I did, then every two years I have to do the same...it's annoying and should be opt in, not out.

Forgive my ignorance, bit i thought it covered anything that could get rte, so a laptop, or a phone. And a radio.

No @Chickenkeev, it's for a TV only. The TV licence rules here are very archaic, hence the proposal to change them.

Oh ok! I thought it was for everything. Gòod to know, thanks.

853ax · 25/11/2023 00:40

I paid mine, when licence arrived I was showing my kids saying that it a very rare piece of paper 😂

DaizenShine · 25/11/2023 00:49

Your viewpoint is actually very popular over here in Scotland. We get letters all the time. "To Occupier. We are investigating this address...". Fairly unconvinced and still not paying it.

JFT · 25/11/2023 00:50

I didn't pay for a TV licence for years, didn't have an aerial supplying my flat, and was no longer able to watch BBC iplayer or any BBC content. Was perfectly happy with that, altho missed a few BBC progs.

Then the rules changed, as I use streaming live TV via a firestick (this is now covered by the TV Licence for all live channels), my wifi is 'to cabinet' and the checking up people ramped up their inquiries. So I bought a Licence reluctantly.

Part of my reason for that is the biggest prosecuted crime against women is failure to purchase TV licence and they do hundreds of thousands a year, the average fine is well over £1k and you get landed with costs. They're sneaky effers.
