Floods in Cork

I was very shocked to see the footage of the floods in Cork last night on the news. Really sad for the homeowners and businesses who are affected. I'm assuming they won't get flood insurance once they've had a flood in their home or premises. So some of the people affected my not be able to claim from their insurance. That's aside from the inconvenience of it all. Not to mention the emotional impact of seeing your possessions destroyed by floodwater. I hope the government puts together an aid package and those affected aren't too long waiting for financial help.

I agree with you @Taytocrisps.

It must be soul destroying. I do so hope they get the aid they need.
The Tánaiste and Minster of Finance are from Cork, that should help.

I remember there was bad flooding on the Blackwater around Mallow. They put in some flood prevention measures. Raised some banks and dug channels to take out excess water. It did help. There's a lot to be done in the city itself still.

Because let's face it : this isn't going away. Terrible flooding in Salthill , Galway not long ago too ?

Part of the trouble is that the OPW still use the 19th century approach of getting the water into the river channels and out asap, whereas the inland fisheries people have been pointing out for years that what is needed is a SUDS (sustainable urban drainage) approach where water outflow is diverted and slowed, with provision made for holding flood waters back and letting them drain slowly. That way there isn't a sudden accumulation of excess water downstream. Never explained by RTE who are still stuck in the past.

Good points @DeanElderberry . Another problem is new housing estates built on or near flood plains. Ripping up trees in the process. We'll be living in crannógs soon...
