Passport expires in a month-can we still go on holiday?

Hi,
My son has an Irish passport that expires at the end of September. We were hoping to go on last minute holiday for a week, but I'm really confused about the rules. The Irish embassy states that any EU passport holder has the right to travel to other EU countries as long as the passport is valid for the duration of stay with no additional validity required, i.e. 6 months after the departure date. However, when I was looking at the Spanish government website, it states EU passport holders need an additional 3 months of validity after their departure date. It seems so confusing, and I don't want to book a holiday unless I'm certain we can go. I have contacted the travel agents, and they also said they were unsure and found the information confusing. Can anyone help?
Thanks

I think it'll be different if you're travelling from UK or Ireland.
If it's from Ireland to another Shengan country it shouldn't matter.
From the uk I'd imagine three moths would be required.
As a caveat I'm only basing this on my travels this summer. Went from uk to Athens on uk passport then flew Athens to Madrid.
Athens to Madrid no passport control on entry to Spain.
I hadn't even realised til DD said how weird it was that we collected our luggage before passport control.
She spent the next three weeks convinced we were illegal immigrants in Spain and we're going to have to smuggle ourselves back into uk 😂

AFAIK RoI isn't in Schengen, but that shouldn't really make much difference, other than meaning passports will be checked. Schengen country >Schengen country is a breeze. (sigh.....)

It's the country of issue of the passport that matters, not the point of origin...

That said I agree with some pp that there's is a bit of a danger in the UK of falling foul of somebody who doesn't understand the legislation.

Thanks everyone really appreciate your replies.

I did email the Irish embassy, and they advised checking directly with the travel operators! The travel operators were not sure either so I think it's best I don't book anything until the passport is renewed.

Thanks again!

That's an appalling level of service TBH..

Yes, I thought so too. They replied almost instantly as well.
